A BIG JOB. FOR TYNESIDE.

THE AQUITANIA TO BE .RECONDITIONED AT THE

ARMSTRONG SHIPYARDS. →.

The great Tyneside shipyards of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and and Co., Ltd., are now undertaking a very extensive amount of mercantile constrution. In addition to other work, they are carrying out one of the most ex'ensive re-conditioning contracts ever undertaken by a shipbuilding Eem. This contract is for the complete overhauling and refitting of the giant quadruple screw Cunarder "Aquitania," after her four years of strenuous war service. This vessel the largest which has ever entered the Tyne--is now safely berthed at the fitting out quay of the Armstrong yard, where she will re- main until completed.

An important feature of the work to be carried out is the cquipment of the vessel for the burning of oil fuel. The advantages of this system for passenger and cargo vessels are nowadays being widely recognised, and in the present instance great economics will be efected. A reduc tion of over 300 hands will cecome possible, and this, together with the abolition of coal bunkers, will great- ly increase the available carrying cap- acity of the vessel As an indication. of the magnitude of this undertaking, it is interesting to review the details and dimension of the "Aquitania,”! which was taken over from the ị builders by the Cunard Company in 1914. Length overall, 902 ft.: breadth, 97 ft. ; depth to shelter deck, 64) ft.; draft (corresponding), 34 FL; | gross tonnage (approximare) 46,350 1ons displacement. 49,430 tons :| weight of hull (approximate). 29,150 tons; weight of machinery (approximate), 9,000 tons; total deadweight, 11,280 tons; horse- power, 56,000; estimated 234 knots; total accommodation, 4,230 passengers and crew.

Although one of the world's great- est vessels, ibe "Aquitania” in no way' taxes the capacity of the Armstrong | yard, the larger berths of which are! designed to accommodate vessels of. greater dimensions than any ocean greyhound yet projected. Great efforts were put forward by these yards during the war, and it is. interesting to recall that at one time: no less than four large and powerful, vessels were laid down at one time: on a single berth, and that not the largest, while on another, occasion six large submarines were in course of construction, also, on a single berth. While still fully equipped for, the building of war vessels, the Armstrong. Whitworth yards have been thoroughly reorganised with a view to the rapid construction of merchant vessels. which
