SYDNEY LORD MAYORALTY
EVEN VOTING.
The adjourned meeting of the Sydney City Council, held to consider the election of Lord Mayor for 1920 resulted in another deadlock, the voting being even, but an adjourn ment to the 30th was carried by a majority of one.
The Lord Mayor (Alderman R. W. Richards) presided, and there was a full attendance of aldermen.
Alderman W. P. M'Elhone moved as at the previous meeting, that Alderman Richards be Lord Mayor;
but
Alderman Bramston raised a point of order that, being an adjourn ed meeting, the previous nominations stood.
Noes, 13-Aldermen Sir Allen Taylor, Brooks, Gloin, Kagon, Jack- son, Mallett, A. M'Elhone, W. P. M'Elhore, Meagher, Richards, Milner Stephen, Lindsay Thompson, and Walker.
Alderman W. F. Fitzgerald moved that there be an adjournment to the 30th frist.
Alderman Bramston seconded the motion.
Alderman Milner Stephen said the only point that could possibly arise out of the adjournment was that some aldermen might meet, with an accident and be unable to at tend the next meeting, or that the, Labour party expected to transfer the allegiance of one of the independent aldermen to their side.
MR.. MASKELYNE ON SPIRITUALISM.
Mr. J. Nevil Maskelyne addressed the members of Aldwych Club re-'- cently on Spiritualism: He said that some people stated that he was against spiritualism for reason of profit. All be could say was if they could bring him one spirit medium who could produce one genuine manifestation he would not exchange his chances for a gold mize, for within a year or two he could be a millionaire as easily as possible. Mr. Maskelyne referred to the large number of mediums whose trickery had been exposed. Having been born into the business, so to speak, he was personally fed, with spiritualism. As to the constitutional basis of so-called spiritualism, there were five factors- in it-telepathy. hypnotism, self- deception, chance, and dishonesty. "Given those factors,” said Mi Maskelyne, you can account..for. everything that has ever happened in connection with spiritualism; You do not need the intervention of spirits at all. Amongst my brother magicians I am held to be rather credulous, because I accept the possibility of mind communicating with mind across a distance, but I have seen so many examples of it that I am bound to accept it”
Alderman Burke said he would not. pair with the National party in the event of an accident.
