PACIFIC SHIPPING STRUGGLE

KEEN COMPETITION AREAD..

The struggle which has been going. on in the Old World to make secure the former supremacy of the "British. mercantile marine is not less serious lor. the interests of the Empire on the Pacific Ocean..

It is not long since the formation of a gigantic shipping combine in Japan with the avowed abject of mak- ing that country the radiating point of a vast system of ocean transportation. During the war great strides have been made by Japanese shipping. It is well known that the annual output of Japanese shipbuilding yards has almost doubled in the past three years, but it is also noteworthy that a recent despatch from Japan: pointed out that owing to heavy freight rates and the increased cost of labour, steel ships. were now casting as much as $18 per tow to build this in what has bee regarded as one of the cheapest labour, markets in the world. A short time ago there passed through this porr small party of japanese shipping men who were travelling to many of the principal ports in America and Europe with the object of gaining all the in--. formation possible as to port regtig-- tion and equipment in order that their own ports may possess all that is most up to date in this direction.

VANCOUVER AND SEATTLE, Apropos of this. It is rather's dia- mai comment on Canadian enterprise to observe that certain Japanese ship- ping lines which formerly made Vine couver a regular port of call have now. eliminated this port from their, list in favour of the better equipped and

seat time, to give one instance, the Whalen Pulp Company on Vancouver Island is shipping the greater part of its product, which aggregates 1,500

'Not only from Japan is the British. merchant service meeting with stern- competition. The United States is making a bold bid to establish a mer- chant marine which shall be second to none in the world. The Anteri cans are fully alive to the fact that in order to compete with Great Britain and Japan they must foster by every means the love of the sea in the youth. of their country. They are now offer. ing every inducement to young men. to take up the merchant marine as a Efe work. They offer to turn out: fully qualified officers within a few. mouths programme which meets with much caustic criticism from experienced British sailors in this part of the world, who point out that the United Sutes would have no difficulty. in obtaining the services of a dufficient supply of British officers of long ex- perience to fill the need, without re- sorting to such schemes of "hustle iri a business that can only be learned by long experience.

One of these on sale here is called The American Merchant Marine." Preceding the rules of the game, on the cover of the box, is a foreword by Mr. Edward N. Hurley, Chairman of the United States Shipping Board. It reads as follows:---

1.

Every American boy has a desire. to travel the world and see lar coun tries ....

For once we have a mer- chant marine building several thou-

sand steamers of the modern type- 25,000,000 tone of shipping created to win the world war, and then to carry goods for America and other The countries in peaceful trade. American boy will again know what ships are the different kinds of modern steel steamers for carrying passengers, and cargo in different kinds. of trade. He will read about the countries to which ships go and the Beas through which they steam, and the goods they carry from America on: outward voyages, and the many pro- ducts that they bring home-voal from Australia and the Argentine, silk from Italy and China, tea of the Orient, and coffee of Brazil. There is no more interesting way of rising to life than on a merchant ship, which takes a boy all over the globe and teaches him by real experience.
