LATE MR. THOMAS REED WHEFLOCK
The death of Mr. Thomas Reed Wheelock occurred on Jan. 5 at the residence of his daughter.. Mrs. F. Ayscough. No. 29. Gordon Road, Shenghai.
The late Mr. Wheelock, who was 70 years of age, was a native of Bos- den, Mass, U.S.A., and first came Shanghai in 1863, when he joined the firm of Wheelock & Co., of which business his brother, Mr. John An- " drew Wheelock, was then the senior Bartner. Thenceforward; until 1889. Mr. Wheelock took an active part in Me business of the firm, and was also, very popular socially and one of the foremost sportsmen of that decade.
In the sixties he was a keen daraman, yachtsman and cross-coun- Pry rider, and was prominent in each branch of these sports. He was onc of the British Eight which suffered defeat by the American eight in 1866, those being the days when "Bob" Little was captain of the English eight and Mr. Archibald Little and Dr. Einle were also famous local cars- men. Until 1889 Mr. Wheelock 100k a activé part in the business of Messrs. Wheelock & Co. and in that year retired, but in 1901 returned to Shanghai during the absence on leave. BRITISH REPLY TO THE CHARGE (F PROFITEERING.
The Deputy Controller of Rew Materials in London on behalf of Sir Arthur Goldfinch, the Director, assured an Australian Press Associa ticn, representative that he had no knowledge of the proposed investiga tion of profiteering in wool He admitted that the high current prices | resulted in considerable profits, but said the Government wood was sub. ject to open competition at the auc tions, which appeared to be the farest and most 'equitable way" of disposing of the stocks.
The high prices could be corrected by re-establishing a system of fixed issue prices. Such artificial interier ence with the restoration of normal trade was not desirable, and was also unfair to the Australian and New Zea land growers, who were entitled to the highest market prices and to share in the profits with the British Government. The only cther way of reducing the prices was to prohibit export and eliminate foreign buying. Approximately half the imported If foreign
