BRIDES "DRIPPING WITH CONFETTI."
VICAR'S VIDOROUS PROTEST:
The Vicar of Maryport the Rev.. J. A. Richards), writing on the popu lar use of confetti at weddings in the current issue of his Parish Magazine.
State:**
Whatever reasons or excuses may be found for the custom of throwing. confetti at married couples when they leave home after the wedding, it is certain that all sensible people must condemn a practice of recent growth. which compels people to arrive at the church smothered with this stuff. It conferti must be used, it certainly should be kept til after the church service. Throwing confetti at people before they reach the church is ir reverent, unseemly, and unkind. All, right-thinking people must realise how unseemly it is for people to enter the church and stand before the altar liter- ally dripping with confetti, as we have. sometimes seen them.
The practice is also unkind. The wedding-day is a great event in a girl's life. Mech time and money have been expended upon the cas- lumes. Very properly, the bride and the bridesmaids take a pride in look- ing their best; and it is abominable that vulgar, brainless people should be allowed to smother them with con-- letti. Strong measures should be aken to put this down. An action for assault would probably be successful. We have seen very pretty weddings quite spoilt by this senseless practice.. As far as the church is concerned, we wish to give notice that people covered with confetti will not be allowed to enter St. Mary's. They will have to go away and come back to the church in a decent and fitting condition before the ceremony can proceed."
