Churchmen had read papers on the subject at Church congresses as far back as that held at Newcastle on- Tyne in 1881, on which occasion there was a considerable discussion.. "One of the speakers was Archdeacon Wilberforce whose contribution to the debate, which is given in the current issue of "Light," the official organ of the Alliance, was that: "In view of the spread of Spiritualism in. its modern" aspects, and of the con- sequences resulting from it, it be comes most important question what ought to be the attitude of the clergy of the Church of England towards believers in the alleged manifesta- tions. That they are affecting and will still more affect the Church is certain, and has made itself manifest | here in Newcastle."
Members of the Church who wen apposed to Spiritualism, continue this gentleman, were alarmed at t progress it had made; hence the fre sent discussion at the Congress The clergy who criticised the movement, however, did so with imperfect data, and it was only fair that they should make their own investigations into the subject before they expressed opin- ions concerning it. For that reason Spiritualists were extremely glad to see the conclusion arrived at by the Church Congress to consider the subject at the Lambeth Conference this year, and that, in the meantime, the Bishops were going to carry on a careful inquiry, conducted by the best men and women who had know ledge and experience of Spiritualism. Such an inquiry had already been conducted by a specially appointed Psychical Research Committee of the well-known City church of St.. Ethelburga, Bishopsgate. This committee, in their

their investigations to their church council in June last, stated that: "Sufficient ground exists to justify religiously-minded people in pursuing reverently and cautiously a scientific inquiry into the pheno mena of Spiritualism, so long as they do not allow themselves to cenfuse the domain of science with that of religion." The report was signed on behalf of the investigating committee by the Rev. W. F. Cobb., D.D., the minister.
Many of the clergy were membera of the Alliance, and spoke at its eetings, while some contributed to "Light." People were taking to Spiritualism in increasing numbers, offered facts because they were instead of being told to have faith. The Spiritualists had proved that it' was quite possible to come into touch with loved ones who had passed awat, and people were naturally Aocking to rasp the substance rather than the shadow. The Church had seen this, and become alarmed.
