GRIEVANCES.

APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT.

The grievances of ex-officers were ventilated at a meeting held at Aus- tralia House recently when resolu Hons were passed calling upon the Government to give Government ap pointments to ex-officers, to deal in a more drastic manner with the weed- ing out of women in Government offices, to reorganise entirely the Ap pointments Department, and make it compulsory for all Government de partments to notify their vacancies to that department. The Govern ment was also called upon to enact Legislation compelling employers to reinstate their men at a fair increased wage to cover present cost of living. A letter was read from Sir Robert Horne pointing out that some of these proposals would require legislative action, although he was in sympathy with the aims of the Ex-f Officers' National Union, under whose auspices the meeting was called.

Major G. M. Horre, who presided, gaid that with regard to the proposal; for half-pay for officers while they were unemployed, Sir Robert Horne was of opinion that-it would tend to encourage demobiiised officers to remain unemployed-(laughter)- and to refrain from attempts to get employment. He maintained that the Government should spend in advertising for ex-officers as much money as they spent in getting ople to come out of civil employ- ent into the Army. (Cheers.) With egard to Civil Service appointments. the speaker contended that a man who had served in the field had qualified for the Civil Service, if he was decently educated. (Cheers.)
