MODERN VOJABULARY.

SOME MEANINGS.

The modern child reads the daily papers with assiduity and then asks What words mean. In these topay- turvy days it is difficult to keep up to-date, for the dictionary will only tell you what a word used to mean. It probably means the oppsite now. The few examples below may save fathers of families from wearing even more bald spots.

Capitalist. Formerly a man who employed capital productively. Now anybody who employed anybody else.

Coal Miner-Sec Upper Classes. Economy-A catch-word started by some member of the Government and "repeated parrotwise by various Heads of Departments, who are still won- dering what the word means.

Flat-A collection of small foodis at a large price. Alternatively, the man who pays that price.

Forty-eight Hour: Week-A sooth- ng concoction invented by Dr. Lloyd George for fractious. Labour (im) patients. As the amount of Commodity now produced in forty- eight hours could equally well be produced in the odd eight, it would appear to deprive the worker of a large amount of leisure.

Labour. A word which used to signify work." but which has now reversed its meaning.

Lock-Out.What happens when an employer earns less than his employees. Regarded by strikers as a rotten trick, but is really rather a joke when put into force by Co- operative Societies.

Member of Parliament. The most expensive talking machine known. Faithfully reproduces whatever is said by its "Master's Voice." Now play- ing a record called "Extravagance," which breaks all others of same na- ture.

Middle-Class Man.-The man who pays and who is getting more and more fed up every day.. Alternative- ly anyone who works more than a forty-eight hour week without talking about it.

Nationalisation.-Signifies "waste" or "inefficiency." Examples. Rail ways, telephones. A possible solu- tion of the unemployment problem. owing to the number of forms that would have to be filled in to get two cwt. of coal per week-perhaps.

Parasite. See Profiteer.

Profit. A modern mystery. We all pay it, but the man we pay it to doesn't get it, nor does the man whom he pays In the case of wool, perhaps the sheep gets it!

Profiteer.See Parasite. Strike. The outcome of that "tired feeling," Alternatively, a holiday taken prior to a rise of wages.
