TO DEVELOP 3,000 ACRES IN

EAST LONDON,"

Proposals for the acquisition of large areas in the eastern portion of the county of London, and for the development of something. like gar -den-city accommodation for a large population that many towns possess, are to be considered by the LCC..

The scheme provides for-

£1,000,000 for the purchase and partial development of the site of *3,000 acres.

20.000 houses with accommoda- tion for mixed classes, to the num- ber,o! 120,000 persons.

The areas in which this great scheme of housing is to be carried out include Barking Town, Ilford, Dagenham, and Romford, where al- ready local schemes of housing, of less ambitious character, and chiefly for the working classes, are under consideration.

Without revealing their identity, the Council has already secured ap- proximately 360 acres, but the Hous- ing Committee recommend that fur- ther acquisitions be made compulsory BOWCTS.

In the districts concerned it is regarded as unfortunate that almost the whole of the sites are occupied by market gardens, which provide for the needs of the Greater London population. But there is no other land available, with the exception of marshy tracts unsuitable for dwel lings.

BARKING NOT CONSULTED. A member of Barking Urban District Council told, 3 Daiy Chronicle representative that they had not been consulted in the matter, and had only been made acquainted, indirectly, with the nature and extent of the L.C.C. proposals.

Under a scheme approved in July į last "not fewer" than 29,000, houses are to be erected, during the next; Ave years. Moreover, the Council scheme are pledged, under the
