Japanese shipping circles continue [Nov. 28] weak, many of the unsub- sidised steamers being engaged only in the transport of coal and salt, and of copra and sugar in the case of voyages to Europe. It goes without saying that the quantity of these cargoes available is far from antis- factory. As regards, freights they also remain comparatively low, standing at Y6 per ton for coal between Wakamatsu and Yokohama, Y5.80 between Muroran and Yokohama, Y7 between Kyushu *and Hongkong, Y10.50 between Kyushu and Singapore, 19 between Dairen and Yokohama, and Y1:50 per picul for sugar between Java and Kobe.
The charter rates stand in the neighbourhood of Y9 for near-sea voyages, Y10.50 for ordinary ocean going services, Y20 for a single European trip and Y13 for round-the- world voyagesang
