Matrimonial Accessory Tax to be imposed on both parties who are the senders or receivers of more than 3 tansu nagamochi and tsuridai (the containers of the bride's trousseau) on the occasion.. If both parties. live in the same town or village one side alone is responsible for the tax. Tan- su, ragamochi and tsuridai are taxed at 120 each.

The First-kite Tax, The Tosa " kite exhibited in the early spring will have to pay Y20 each.

Gold or Plating Watch Tax will be Y3 per year.

Jewelled Rings will pay Teach per year.

Shawl Tax will be levied at 50 sen each per year.

The good people of Nagaoka will have to think out the luxuries ten- dencies which are not hit by the new scheme. Probably it covers most of the things in the village that raise life above the level of eating and drinking. -except of course, the special foibles of the wealthy, which will be only inadequately touched by the villa tax.

CO OPERATION IN

PRODUCTION.

In a former issue (see Engineering, vol, cvi, page 641), we called atten- tion to the scheme of co-operative production, which Messrs. Priestman Brothers. Limited. Hull, set up at their works. The scheme, is described in detail in a ramphlet now issued by the Higher Production Council, 29, Charing Cross, S.W. 1, who-advocate its extension, since it would increase

leaders and men's representatives also recommend it. The council state that the scheme is based on the principle of securing increased production through the co-operative effort of all. concerned in the industry, obtained by a common interest in the result. The standard average output per month is ascertained. For purposes of lus tration this standard may be design- ated by 100. If production is in- creased to, say, 130, under the Priest-- män system everyone, from the 'man-

office staff, receives 30 per cent. in crease on his wages for the four. fol. lowing pay days. Thus a man whose weekly rate of pay is 50s, would re- ceive for the four fellowing pay days 65s. Where this scheme operates the result has been so satisfactory that the percentage of increased output has been as high as 80 per cent., and never below 21 per cent. above the standard. The average increase taken from the time it was first introduced Is 50 per cent. Four hundred and fifty employees were paid last year? additional wages to the extent of £24,000, and according to the Works Committee, it has produced a feeling of good fellowship between the work. men themselves and a better under- standing between the men and manage- ment. Certainly the result, as far as production is concerned, has been all that could be desired.

turea

One of the most desirable of this method is that the results are not brought about by greater indivi dual effort, but are entirely due to the spirit of co-operation and team work between men and departments, the men being anxious to prevent loss of time caused by delay in, the transfer- ence of work from one department to another, and to the desire displayed by each man to help a Jellow work man out of a difficulty: It also adds

I also zest to the men's work because they display the keenest interest in follow ing the progress of production. Engineering
