HEAVY FALL IN THE COMPANY'S PROFITS.

The Osaka Shosen Kaisha's report, now.in circulation, for the half year ended June 30, states that a heavy blow was received through the de- crease in cargo and the sudden fall' in freight rates. The boycott is said "not to have seriously affected the North and South China services. "To -sum up," says the report," the ship- ping circles being exceedingly depres sed during this term, the company's business sustained a severe blow, while expenditures still amounted to as enormous a sum as before; but for all this fair results were realised." The number of the company's steamers together with those chartered during this term totalled,151 with an aggre gating tonnage of 380,892 tons which were allotted to 48 home and foreign. services and carried 1,179,142. pas- sengers and 67,163,225 pieces of -cargò at a charge obtained amounting to Y66,679,609. Adding to the above other miscellaneous receipts, total receipts of Y73,581,788 were obtained, after substracting from which the total expenditure of Y47,521,828, ret profts of Y26,059,960 were realised. A compared with corresponding term of last year, an increase of *Y8,365,292 was made in the total receipts but a decrease of Y9,86,907 in net profits was seen while as compared with last term, a decrease of Y25,280,955 in net profits is shown.

The appendix to the report con- tains some instructive figures on the business standing of the company. The paid up capital of 1884 amount- ing to Y1,042,265, has increased to Y37,375,000, with debentures amount- ing to Y3,500,000, making a total of Y40,975,000. During the same period, the company's fleet has increased from 92 steamers with a total tonnage of 16,458, to 135 steamers with a tonnage of 385.072. Six vessels of from 6,500 to 7,00 tons are under construction, and t 1 of 10,000 tons..
