SHANGHAI'S COAL IMPORT.

WHY CHINA GOES AHEAD OF

SENAPAN,

NO PROSPECT OF LOWES CHARGES.

The NC Daily News of Oct. SC Teays: The Egures published showing that ring the quarter ended Sept. 90, China bad supplied more coal t | Shanghai than had Japan, a reversal of the usual position, have to be accepted with the one qualification that the figures cover only a quarter. in une" unse and half years in the.. others. Nevertheless there is this: strikrag het that Chinese coal com- ing into this port hut quarter Rulourios so, practically three-quarters of the total r the previous half Sear. viz: 221,0TH tons as against 282.318 tons.

It will be remembered that some time ago i was state in these columns that the chal supply from Japan cok zot be reckoned upon: |indefinitely aw the mines-there-would. in a very few years have as much as they could do to meet the demanda pade upon them by rome indua- tries The present figures only serve to bear out, thus forecast and: to show that the fulfilment of the Inmphery was very much nearer than

the writer anticipated

It in Fascinating to glance over the a murket reports for the last five years. placed at our disposal throughs the courtesy of Mears. Wheelock & Cc., un obtuia therefrom a skotchy. idea of the history of coal during that perin. It may come as a tatter: of surprise to those who have now become accustomed to paying the present appalling prices for coal to learn that in the good old days before the war coal was cheap.

The highest priced Kaiping coal, ex wharf, was Th. 7.00 per too Stpe Dost expensive Japanese lump was the same price, Horan anthracite wus T. 13, and Pensbu navy lurap was only The. 12. The aristocrata: amongst the black diamonds in 1914. sane from Cardiff and Wollongong, would not have been at The. 19 and us they were not for burning; they. Tls. 14 per ton respectively. Before/ 1915 had grown very old both Car diff and Wollongong stocks went off the market and Shanghai was left with native and Japanese coals..

JAPAN BUYING CHINESE COAL... Generally speaking, about twice as much Japanese as: Chinese-coa), carce to Shanghai during the vents- 1914-1919, inclusive, and the change, which was chronicled, appears to have set in about March of this. year. It was then expected by native deelers that prices for the Japanese commodity would come down, but their hopes were doomed. to disappointment by the comple tinn of the negotiations by the Japanese Government for coal to meet the railway requirements.

For the fiscal year, comiencing April, Fast, the Japanese Goveza fment contructed to take 3,250,000. tops and this we reported to have entirely absorbed all available sup- plies of coal from every source what- soever and the chances of there baing out for export were all in-- deed. The position was aggravated somewhat by the increasing demands for bunker coal for the growing num-: ber of Japanese and ocean-geing

mers released by the Home. Zovemments and returning to trada in the Far Eastern waters....

The difficulty was met by Chinese epal and despite reduction in freight no decrease in the price of the in- creasing quantity of Chiness coul reaching this port was to be noted and for a very good reason. To wards the end of April a big demand experienced both in the north and for Jump and better grade coal was Japen, and in May it was reported

Kaiping cool that the demand. exceeded the supply, Advancing freight in July and large exports. kept prices firm in July and demand was reported as being much in. excess of supply."

In September it was stated that, despite the fact that the mines in Kinshu, Hokkaido and Nippon hied increased, their production, home consumption had risen in the same proportion, and in any event: the production from this last two not. being exported to Shanghai hud. no effect upon the local market..

CRINA THE SOLE SUPPORT.

From the foregoing it will be seen thut Shanghai is very near thy, stago when it will have to look to purely Chinese supplies of cool. The rea- sons for the shortage of Japanese onal-thy railway requirements and the increasing demand for bunker coalre by no means extraordinary, nor are they at all non-recurrent, and it would seem that with railway and shipping requirements the next year as they are thie, Japan' will st be an importer of Chinese coal, while, the two foregoing factors increase in importance, as they are practically bound to do, tha;, demed upon the Chinese resources cannot very well do otherwise then incredze.

It will be appreciated from this that the prospects of turas relief from the present prices of coal are- ao remote sa to be prly non- exittent and with twistrial. growth of the Ishnd Fenire the market will be made h inaen and whatever, price her trea· pre prepared to pay for cool will be this. price Shanghai, will have to pay..
