AN INDIAN IRISH PROBLEM.
DEMAND FOR GREATER-
MEASURE OF STLF. GOVERNMENT.
Evidence on behalf of the All-- india Moslem League was submitted to the Earl of Selborne's Joint Committee on the Government of India Bill on Aug. 13.
Mr. M. A. Jennah, president of the Bombay branch of the Home Rule League, advocated that India was ripe for a greater measure of self- government, and said it was a libel- on the educated people of India to say that they would think only of themselves, and neglect the interests of the masses. The Central Govern ment should not consist of irrespon- sible critics, but of responsible men who realised the value of their vote.: The Committee should not approach Indian reform with timidity and prejudice. "Beggars could not be choosers, and it was well perhaps to accept what was offered them, and while everybody in India agreed that Mr. Montagu's proposed · reforms were very valuable they did not go far enough, and the result would be that in a few years there would be |more difficulties than there were. now, and India would become some- thing like an Irish problem.
Cross-examined by Mr. Bennett, he said the expression. Beggars can't be choosers" represented the attitude of India, and he would do, his best to remove that feeling from the minds of the people if the Joint Committee and Parliament met them in a generous way.
In further evidence, the witness said the Moslems were in favour of women's suffrage. He frankly appre- hended trouble unfess Parliament met the strong volume of opinion for advance in self-government.
After some further evidence had been heard, the Committee adjourned.
HARD ON THE CHILDREN,
The changes of season are trying periods for babies and young children. With one day warm and bright and the next day wet and chilly the little ones are especially liable to colds, cramp and colic.
