The abnormal accumulation of KONGKONG, 3711 OCTOBER, 1929. merchandise at the London Dock's has caused the destruction of rats: and mice to become an insistent pro- Nem, but, the methods now adopted promise great results.

We are taking so many precau- tions now," said an official, that it is almost impossible for a rat to get off a ship, and the few that do get Into the docks have heavy odds against them. At the Albert Docks we are putting eight traps in each shed, but the steps taken to prevent rats from landing or breeding are so successful that the number killed does not average more than 15 a week on the three miles of quayside.

Another official pointed out that the rat has a remarkable faculty for adapting itself to climatic conditions. Rats are occasionally found to have arrived in the cold storage chambers of vessels, and in their period of life in a low temperature they develop “overcoats," or an additional outer covering, which grows very quickly. Rats, according to reliable estion- ates, are responsible for the des truction in England of about $50,000,000 worth of food annually. Ninety per cent. of local authorities are taking action against them.

Mr. Horatio Bottomley seems to have fallen a little behind the times. in his suggestion that the Poet Laureate has not ved up to the duties of his office in the matter of providing an official ode for the celebration of peace. Pusting aside the possibility that the Laureate may be waiting for peace before celebrat ing it, there is no longer any obliga. tion on him to write verse to order. The stipulation in that respect goes back to Wordsworth, and the office is now one of the few remaining sine- cures. There was, indeed, some dis- cussion about abolishing it altogether on the death of the last holder-whose misfortune it was that he wrote best in prose and the retention was decided on probably in order that the divorce between the Government and Art might not be too pronounced. But the duties and privileges of the post were summed up once and for all on the death of Southey by the authors of the Bon Gaultier ballads.

To keep him merry.

And nothing to do but to pocket

his gold?

The sherry is no longer available, and there are few modern stomachs that can be merry on this particular wine. It is true that the Laurate of Bon Gaultier is represented as letting his "fancies roam abroad, in search. of a hint for a birthday ode." but birthdays come and go nowadays, and the Poet Laureate busies himself with sterner stuff. Perhaps he is reading the society papers, though, at odd times, looking for hints as to the personality-and nationality- of the future Princess of Wales in order, to outdo Tennyson's fine poem of welcome.
