AMERICAN DEAD IN FRANCE.

PARENTS AND RETURN

OF BODIES.

Despite strong protests from the French Government against the re-i moval at the bodies of American soldiers from the French cemeteries until after January, 1922, the majority of the House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee decided that the State Department should make every effort to secure the return of these bodies within the next few months, In reply to 75,000 inquiries sent to the parents of fallen soldiers, the chairman of the com mittee declared that 75 per cent. ask for the return. of their dead. and he insisted that the Government must keep its solemn promise. It was explained to the committee that France was opposed to removal because of fears for the health of her people and the appal

SHARP SENTENCES FOR FRAUD ON BOOKMAKERS

At Croydon Benjamin Sinfield (26) was sentenced to six morths' hard labour, and Lionel Skelton (27) to twelve months' hard labour. for de- frauding bookmakers by sending betting telegrams after the results of the races were known. They did this by getting two girl telegraphists to delay the telegrams until the names of the winning horses could be inserted, the messages, however, being transmitted as having ap- parently been handed in some time earlier.

The girls, it was stared, received no money from the prisoners, but had accepted presents of chocolates and gloves. Skelton declared that as bookmakers had robbed him for vears through "false prices," which he regarded as profiteering, they were legitimate victims.

The sentence in the case of Sin- field, who had been invalided from the army after serving throughout -the-war-involved the loss of his pen

sion.
