GIANT FLYING-BOAT WRECKED.

START OF 8,000-MILE TRIP.

OFFICER DROWNED IN EAST COAST ACCIDENT.

One of the giant Porte flying-boats, the "Felixstowe Fury," was totally. wrecked in Harwich harbour on August 11 in the presence of thou sands of holiday-makers, and Lieu- tenant McLeod, the wireless officer was drowned. The boat had just started on an 8,000 mile flight to Egypt and the Cape.

The accident, which was witnessed by large crowds, pccurred at the mament of departure on à voyage which bade fair to furnish a new and important chapter in the history of aerial travel by the opening-up · of the away from England to South Africa. Of the crew of seven one; Lieutenant 3. E. S. McLeod, the wireless, operator, lost his life by. drowning.

Apparently the machine experience ed some difficulty in taking off from the water owing to the somewhat restricted space in the harbour, and after rising nosedived into the har- bour. Salvage boats. put off and picked up the crew, with the excep tion of Lieutenant McLeod.

An eyewitness gave the following description of the disaster. Tha machine left the slipway and took the water beautifully shortly after nine o'-luck. She "taxied" for about a quarter of a mile down-wind towards Landguard, Point, and then turned and began "taxying" up the wind, and was just leaving the water. when, on passing the Norfolk, a

The "Evening Standard" says that the projected route of the flying-boat, which was built under the personal. supervision of Commander Porte, was well over 8,000 miles. From Felix- stowe the first stage of the journey was to be to Plymouth, thence past Ushant, along the west coast of France to the north of Spain, and on to Gibraltar.. The tight was to be continued via Sardinia and Malta to Alexandria; thence up the Nile to Khartoum, Victoria Nyanza, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyassa, across to Beira, and down the coast to Durban and Capetown.

Refuelling bases had been estab lished all along the route and arrangements made for wireless com munication and the transmision of meteorological reports from various points. Long tests. had been: successfully accomplished during the last three months without a mishap of serious importance. The machine could carry 30 passengers at 80, to 90 miles an hour.
