THE RULES OF THE AIR.

An airman who in the course of practice flew so low, that he killed two convalescent officers who were driving in a trap along a country road was recently acquitted of manslaughter. In the present ten tative state of the rules of flying no one would desire to see himy commit- ted to prison on a grave charge. But it is important to realise that a comparable accident in which a motorist, or for that matter a cyclist or a horseman, was involved might, lead to a severe penalty. A motor driver who took an S bend at forty miles an hour to show that he could do it, and who killed a pedestrian as a result, would not escape the sentence of a court. But the case of the airman o "stunts" at a height that endangers the earth-man is in no way dissimilar, except that it is newer end that the rules to judge it by are still nichodte. In the near future, when flying is a common. place. these rules will have to be as strictly defined and observed as those of the road and the sooner we begin their observance the easier they will be to enforce. Already there regulations Air Ministry are which prohibit flying low general, and in particular flying near to horse traffic, to grazing cattle, to telegraph wires, and the like. But. as yet there is no body of case law to assist, the application of these! rules. There is indeed a certain natural zest among young airmen for
