One of the many difficulties con- nected with the treatment of par- alysed persons, says the medical correspondent of the Times, has always been the abstaining of exercise and

movement. This difficulty seemed almost insuperable,

and, though numerous efforts of a more or less ingenicus kind were made to overcome it, none of these produced results which could be termed satisfactory.

What was required was manifestly a medium of support in which the patient could rest while at the same

time remaining free to attempt more. ment in any direction that might still be possible for him. Apparatus did not secure this ideal, because it was always in the last issue bard and unyielding at the points of contact. and sooner or later inflicted pain.

But there was one medium which answered all the demands, and it was left to a patient to think of it and demonstrate its utility. That medi um was water. In a swimming bathi the water provides the patient with complete support and at the same time leaves him complete freedom of action.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of this patient the idea was translated into action and was found to be not only workable, but exceedingly valuable. Medical men were quick to adopt. the new me thod and to perceive its possibilities. At the Tooting Military Hospital, thanks largely to the efforts of Dr. Farquhar Buzzard, paralysed men have been given the opportunity of using it and have profited greatly by its use.
