PROJECTED INCREASE OF'
CAPITAL.
An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of the Mitsui Banking Corporation, Ltd. was held on July 8 for the purpose of considering the revision of the Articles of Association and the increase of capital from: Y20,000,000 (200,000 shares) to Y100,000,000 (1,000,000 shares). Out of the 800,000- shares to be issued, '300,000 shares - will be offered for public subscription at a premim. The following are the more important of the reasons for the projected increase of capital-
1-In view of the bright prospect. of the developinent of Japanese com- merce and industry, which bare · already made great strides, the accommodation capacity of the banks | must also make preparations to cope
with the situation.
2.--The
present capital. of Y20,000,000 of the Bank is, far from satisfactory in view of the fact that the total amount of deposits in the Bank now stands at Y330,000,000 to Y350,000,000 with a prospect of further increase..
With a view to assuring the depositors of the security of the Bank, the capital must be increased to cope with the new situation..
3 The Mitsui Bank which has hitherto been, run with the aid of the Mitsuis and their relatives now desires to co-operate with the public in general for the development of

THE NIPPING HABIT:
Dr. Josiah Oldfield, speaking to the Fruitarian Society, on "Diet and the Birth Rate," attributed, the fall in the figures. to the fact that we are an habitual meat-eating nation, In every country where meat-eating was a national habit the birth rate had
· decreased in the last 50-years. On the other hand, in countries like Bul- garia, Rumanía, and Serbia, where meat was not a national dietary, the
· birth rate was high and increasing.
Experiments proved that meat- eating produced sterility. Eggs to- day were not as healthy as they should be because the fowls were overtaxed with egg-producing food, such as fish, blood, and meat. In his hospital. they made sure that their eggs were got from fowls which fed naturally on grain or in the fields.
Dr. Oldfield went on to condema the beer supplied to-day, It was not, he said, made of malt and hops. "I am going to brew beer." he continued. "I told my staff that they should have a pint of real kops and malt. beer a day each if they would buy none of the other, for the two won't mix."
Real old-time beer in his opinion was not injurious to the fertility of the race.
Dr. Oldfield astonished some of his hearers by stating his view as a medical man that it did no haria to get "roaring drunk" once a month.- It would do more harm to keep sober by baving one nip and then another nip and becoming a regular nipper
"I once asked some workmen of mine." he continued, how much it took to get one of them drunks. They said about a pound, so I told them, "Now don't drink at work, but when... You feel you want to get drunk come and tell me, and Fl advance you pound. I am told that it takes more than a pound on the present beer. Well, it's not worth it.”
LABOUR AMBASSADOR:
The appointment of Mr. G. NË Barnes as Ambassador; to Berlin is stated to be in recognition of the fact that he did more than any other single délegate to get the Labour Charter accepted by the Conference. It is a very notable appointment in | many; ways. Russian Bolshevist
could go no further than the appoint- ment of Labour men as arabassadors: It looks like a bright idea of Mr. Lloyd George one of those strøkes of genius by which he often does the correct thing psychologically. It is In the ranks of Labour. that' the most statesmanlike outlook has often been found of late. Labour, `a somehow, has been less Inclined to a hysterical attitude towards the enemy than classes which consider themselves superior. For this reason alone Mr. Barnes would create much. more confidence in Berlin, than the ordinary diplomatist. His appoint- ment is, besides, an expression of - confidence in the reality of the Ger-, [mán révolution. From the Labour point of view it is also a mark of pro- gress." Difficult as it is to imagine m- Labour leader being appointed am- bassador to the Hohenzollern Court, it is still more difficult to imagino a self-respecting "Labourite accepting the appointment with all that it entailed of stiff formalities.
