YOUNG HIRST.

H. J. Henley, writing about George Hirst in the Erily Mail says:

Long before he has reached the age of forty-eight the average pro- fessional cricketer has put on the white coat of an umpire or has enter- ed the ranks of those who teach small boys to cut and drive at the public schools. His centuries are memories. The eye and wrist that once brought him boundaries have grown slow.

But George Hirst, born on Septem- 1, ber 7, 1971. las returned to county cricket after nearly five years, to make a mockery of his birth certif cate and to produce the most remark able batting of the new season..

If this square-shouldered mag, almost as broad as he is long, were the son of the Hirst who first played for England twenty years ago, his recent scoring would be remarkable. When it is considered in conjunction with his years it approaches the miraculous.

His hair has grown white. That is the only sign of veteranhood. The eyes that look out from the round face, sur-burned to the colour of red brick, are very boyish eyes. Grey and keen and bright, you feel that they must see the ball clearly and face the most desperate situation tranquilly. But it is only when he is at the crease that you realise what a youth this veteran is.

Pace may have gone from his bowl. ing, although he can still get wickets; something may have left his Felding, although at midoff he still stands like a wall between the batman and the boundary: but his batting seems unimpaired..

It is at once significant and as tonishing that he still flashes out the hook stroke so frequently-that stroke which sweeps the rising ball from the vicinity of his breastbone to the square-leg boundary. For the honk is essentially a youthful stroke -youthful in its daring. youthful ||

bodily quickness. And his stamina i as surprising as his activity. After gunning out a four he does not find it necessary to lean on his bat and painfully recover his wind as do may men ten years his junior. He simply pulls down the peak of his cap and faces the next Ball without pause.

Exceptional physical endowments, a square body packed with sinew and vitality, count for a great deal: but Hirst owes much to his attitude of mind. It is impossible to conceive a situation that could ruffle him. If an earthquake occurred behind him he would probably make his stroke- first and inquire what the matter was afterwards.

When he returned to the pavilion from winning the game for England against Australia at the Oval in 1902, after a feverish finish that had set many spectators shaking with excite ment, a friend asked him if he had

He had not been nervous because he believed in himself. The wicket may be bad, the bowling deadly, but he is always quietly confident that he can triumph over all dificulties. And it is because he believes in him- self, not less than because he has a phenomenal physique, that we find him scoring centuries with a young man's air when he is really an old man for a first-class cricketer.
