AMERICAN LITERATURE.
With some little disagreement of taste as to expression, we who take interest in such things are all agreed that America leads in the matter of the Short Story. Their fiction maga zines, cheaply got up, and carrying A percentage of rubbish, exhibit a wealth of invention and art.
The short story is a forin of literature on

study has been expended. It seems to be aform that suits the American literary temperament, and, of course America is entitled 10 credit
she for the fact that
sup. plies an intelligent and extensive demand for it, whereas other coun- tries, our
included, rather cwn neglect it. Every importan: London publisher tells us the same thing, that there little demand for short stories.
In essays the Americans are per- baje not more than neck and neck with us, though they have some noticeable practitioners. One little known to the British reader, who deserves to be well known, is John Burroughs, who is an up-to-date and more philosophical Thoreau.
The subject has been more or less
thrust into the middle of our field of
attention by the receipt of a curious bocks published by the Platonist Press of Alpine, N. J. Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie is, the writer, and his title is A" Romance of Two Centuries," a tale of the year 2025. Here are 365 pages containing a welter of thought, many excellent sociological ideas, but nc story that can be properly called a story. This man will probably never write a readable story, yet if he would turn to the quiet, leisurely, essay form, he might be a brilliant success.
Asia in the year 2025 naturally interests us considerably. We shall make a point of coming back here then, il we can get a passport. The yellow race are then to have out
distanced the whites, owing to their Tove of peace, and the latter's lust for war.
