The advance in the value of the raw material still continues but not quite to such an extent as last week.. There is some hope now that prices will become steadier, as the strength of the market at Liverpool is chiefly due to the demands from Manchester which may wrobably now ease off somewhat with prices where they are. Business in Cloth has not been done, in any great volume during the past week, although there has been quite a fair amount done by those who could purchase at once instead of having to await a cable reply from abroad. What would have been possible for India and China had the conditions. been favourable is enother matter and to receive as most Merchants have done, cable after cable accepting prices telegraphed, or making what in ordinary circumstarices would be workable counter-offers is inore than disappointing. It is naturally impos- sible to leave prices ärm while the market is as it is and it being two to three weeks before a reply, can be received.

Cloth and yara prices have strengthened each day quite independent at what cottoni has been doing, and taking stock of the position to-day reveals a very different aspect from what it was a couple of months ago. The business done during the past few weeks has been very large, there is no doubt about this. Mills and wearing sheds which had only a small pec centage of their machinery ruznumption per bead and that at short time, are now foile employed. Under such circumstances they are not willing to work at the losing basis they would have taken and their margin at present | while of course nothing like the margins obtained during the war will not show them a loss. At the moment there does not seem any prospect of lower prices, in fact it is generally anticipated that cloth prices. have a fair way to go yet before the top is reached. The cable delays are still very bad, the time taken to India at the moment being about 8 days, which renders ordinare business absolutely impossible. We shall not issue our Report next week. it being Whit-week and our offices will be closed all week for the usual holiday.

SMUGGLER.
An Army chaplain named George Lawrence was charged at Folkestone recently with attempting to defraud the Customs by smuggling tobacco.
A Customs officer said that on the arrival of a steamer from Boulogne defendant said he had nothing llable for duty, but on searching his bag. gagle witness found-
Sixteen packets of cigarettes, Three tins of Cavendish tobacco, A box of cigars. Defendant said that, as an officer, he had often travelled and had not been asked to declare before. The Customs officer said, the defendant also told him that he was able to get them fairly cheap, and, being de mobilised, he wanted something to ge on with.
He was ordered to pay double value and duty, £5 28. 2d, and the tobacco and cigars were confiscated,
