In the ports, where export business has just begun really to revive, there is a sharp cleavage again over the employment of Chinese on ocean- going ships. There has been heavy demobilization of men from the naval service of late, and many a man has had to hang around until now, having a lean time looking for a ship. So the sailors and firemen of Liverpool have led the way in demanding, that Chinese crews should not be shipped. So serious was their attitude that last week Chinese engaged on three steamers owned by one line were withdrawn, and were substituted by British.
Chinatown does not like the lock of it, and concerted action is being taken to secure official help. Over fifty Chinese boarding housemasters have sent a petition to the Board of Trade protesting against what they describe as
tyranny, boycott and oppression."
They point out that during the war thousands of Chinese sailed-in-
