DANCING "WAACS.”

-BY HILDA M. LOVE.

SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE, "May I?" "Oui."

And the next moment they were leading the Butterfly Barn Dance down the YMCA. hall, with a hundred couples following.

Lot of beginners on the floor to night," remarked the "Waac," as her partner adroitly manured her through the crush.

"Yes, there's a batch of us down from Cologne," he said "What's this Canadian roll everyone is talking about?"

She took him to the learners' room afterwards, where big men solemnly. practised the "twinkle," and were ordered not to jump and to keep their shoulders still

Smilling, be emerged ten minutes

later.

"I've got that step," he said triumphantly.

What's this they're starting? The lancers ?"

"Yes, they do it with the French

glide here."

"Shall we?**

"Let's!"

There are no wallflowers in France, for every "Waac" can dance, and dance well.

Some of them never danced a step before they put on uniform, but to- day no gyration of the toe is beyond them: nothing from "" to "z" in the dance world can dismay them.. Girls who revel in the absence of gloves, chaperons, and programmes at home dances have to thank the

Waacs."

None of these three was available in France when the dance craze that has gripped the world was first started by the khaki girls on

slippers jazzed round the Y.M.C.A. huts almost before the word" jazz was known on our side of the Channel

The best dancers are still in France-those of both sexes, and the jolliest dances, too. Eyes, dance as well as toes at the khaki gatherings. There is none of that painful pleasure so often seen on the set, serious faces of dancers at home. They dance here because they can't help it not because they think they ought to or because everybody else is doing it.

Like all good dancers the Army has a permanent affection for the waltz, while the Hesitation Dip and the Boston Two-Step compete for next favourite. Woe betide any adventurous newcomer who suddenly introduces a new and showy step into a dance...

At home in England, fluffy dresses, expensive refreshments, and amazing black jazz bands, may all be con- ducive to delightful dancing

but here, where none of these things are, where they rise after a mug of steaming Y.M. tea and a good solid C.A. bun and whirl. through the Tango for the sheer joy of being alive, is where the true dance spirit dwells.

*GRAFT.

Seemingly a country becomes har- dened to the squandering of its resources, much as eels get used to being skinned alive: There were times when such scandals as those of the national shipyards at Chepstow and Beachley and the motor depot at Slough would have roused a storm of indignation, but now the mass of the public have grown apathetic, resigned to a fate which they have come to regard as unavoidable. They know that these scandals, upon which the Tintes has just thrown further light, are but examples of what has gone on, and still continues, in all direc- tions. There is no way of stopping them Under our present system of responsible government exposures in the press and in Parliament make hardly any impression at all, or at the best only result in the closing. down, of some exceptionally stupid project after a vast expenditure bas been incurred; and the affair of the Loch Doon aerodrome showed that officialdom need now have no fear that it will be called to account for any blunder, however inex cusabis and however costly. Some of the particulars of the construction. of the national shipyards at a cost of four millions would be amusing if one could afford to jest about things. that are leading the country to bank- ruptcy. Thousands of men were.. employed upon work which was con. stantly abandoned or altered or un- done. For instance, a gang" were employed night and day- in laying a foundation which two days after its completion was blown up with explosives because it did not fit in with an amended plan. A wet dock was partly made at a heavy cost for excavation and of sheet steel piling, but then. It was given up, and when a Parliamentary Committee came on

a visit of inspection it was officially directed that a train of empty waggons should be placed on a line to obstruct the view of this evidence of wasted labour, which the MPs were "not to be encouraged" to see. Many. thousands of pounds were spent in the erection of a hospital for the workers. As there were no patients, the local officials actually attempted to borrow some from the VAD. hospital at Chepstow to occupy the empty beds when the Shipping Controller inspected the works Truth,
