CAMBRIDGE-DEGREES FOR

WOMEN.

A STRONGLY SUPPORTED

MOVEMENT,

The question of the admission of women to fulf membership of the.. University is once more under dis cussion. A leaflet putting forward certain speciic proposals has just been issued tearing the signature of seven heads of colleges, 24 professors, and about 150 other members of the Seriate, of whom over 75 are either present or past. Fellows of colleges." The movement has therefore very infuential support, and as the signa tories intend to petition the Counci of the Senate at the earliest suitable. occasion to nominate a syndicate to report on the measures necessary for effecting their object there seems quite a reasonable prospect of the admission of Women in the near future to degrees, and other privileges appertaining to membership of the University.

same

same

At the present time women and mer students attend the courses of instruction, are under practically, the same code of rules, are examined on the same papers by the same examiners, and, fact, are in residence on mych the terfos as one another. Women, however, are not, members of the University; they are not allowed to style themselves graduates, and are not admitted to any of the University offices. A woman student may have been placed above Senior Wrangler, but if she wants a BA or MA label she has to get it from one or other of the newer universities.

In recent years, even before the war women have taken a greatly Increased share in the higher work of education and in research, in the medical profession, and in the public service. The experience of the im portance and variety of the services which they have rendered to the nation during the present war has undoubtedly affected greatly the attitude of men of all classes towards the whole question of the position and work of women. The change of attitude thus brought about has been most remarkably illustrated by the agreed extension of the franchise to women; in this extension the University franchise has been in cluded

Not content with merely expressing their convictions about the matter and adducing their arguments, the signatories have., issued a definite scheme or set of proposals which, though ostensibly put forward as suggestions, no doubt convey the general plan by which it is hoped to effect the reform. The chief features of the scheme are as follows:-

-1. Women to be admitted to the full membership of the University on the same conditions as ten as regards matriculation, terms, and admission to examinations for degrees.

2. Women to reside in a recognized hostel.

3. Wormen to be liable for the samé fées as men (at present women do not pay University dues).

4. Women to be eligible for all' University offices.

5. Women to wear academical dress, and to be subject to the usual regulations for maintaining discipline, and to be represented in the disciplin

THE GOVERNMENT'S FOLJOY. A deputation from the Parliament- ary Committee of the Trade Unionis Congress/waited upon Lord Ernie, President of the Board of Agriculture, urging Government control of the nation's agricultural land and of the distribution of produce, in order to secure the best results in the interests of the community.

2

In his reply Lord Ernie referred to the powers the Government obtained' in 1917 and to the courageous use of them where land was not cultivated to the best advantage. He thought that land would become normal when prices were stable.

With regard to hind for officers and soldiers, the Government had obtained land, and their polley was to divide small holdings into three classes. First there would be small holdings proper, of 15 to 20 acres, of the best lant and available only for really experienced men econdly there would be cottage holdinks-a cottage with half an acres to two... acres of land attached. The holders' Pot these could work for a wnge, Bp

plementing these wages by profacts from their land. Thirdly for men of no experience. large tracts of land would be taken. Each cottage.would have a half-acre plot, and the whole **** concern would be fin under a scienie tific manager. The holders of these would receive wages and, a share of the profits.
