Considerable interest has been aroused on the Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange by the news of the inauguration, on March 25 of a new steamship line to Australia. Practically speaking trade in this direction has been a monopoly in the hands of the Conférence.

The recent tendency to acquire outside freights by the big shipping companies was bound to make itself felt in a reflection of opinion by the Dominions most intimately.concerned.. The Press in Australia and New Zea- land has indicated for some time a growing feeling against the centri- petal tendency of shipping interests between those Colonies and the United Kingdom;.. and it is therefore not altogether a surprise to find that Mr. Hughes' Government has decided | to place one of its steamers on a Lon- don berth for Australian ports, to be loaded independently of the Confer ence agents.

There is no intention of the Gov. ernment so far to cut rates. Natur- ally the vexed question of deferred rebates is sure to arise; and, as | Australia is not in sympathy with this system, it will be interesting to see the attitude adopted towards the new line by the powers that be. If the liners choose to exert their hold over the shippers, and to withhold rebates if they ship by the Govern- meit steamer, a situation might arise" that would lead to rate cutting.

The Balla (8,300 tons) will be the first steamer to leave London for the" new Australiaa Government line, and she will leave that port on the 25th March, leading previously at Middlesbrough. Disorderly scenes occurred at Bow- street recently when David Ramsay, of Leicester, was sentenced to five months' second division imprison- ment for making a seditious speech at Croydon.

In his defence, Ramsay contended that he had done nothing more seditious, than had been doge by Carson, Smith, and others."
