The party, which "consisted of twenty-two artists, was on a five- weeks' tour in France. A letter giving similar details of the accident. was received by Miss Lena Ashwell * who immediately left for Cardiff, hav- ing telegraphed to the husband of the unfortunate young lady to meet her there. Miss Ashwell has twenty-eight concert parties in, France; some, top in Egypt and in Italy. In France Miss Ashwell's parties now occupy the theatre buildings in the large towns. Twelfth Night," for exam- ple, is being played in Lille Theatre.

A SHINTO BELIEF.

The other day there was reported from Sendai a story of a village pro- cession which ended up with the portable shrine charging into the local police station and wrecking it.. The reader might be disposed to conclude that it was merely an ex- hibition of rowdyism or drunken- ness, but the affair has far more significance than this. Readers of Lafcadio Hearn will remember his account of these processions. If the

shrine strikes against-any house-even against an awning only that is a sign that the god is not pleased with the dwellers in that house. If the shrine breaks part of. the house that is a serious warning. But it may happen that god wills to enter a house-breaking his way.. Then woe to the inmates unless they fee at once through the backdoor and the wild procession, thundering ir, will wreck and rend and stash and splinter everything on the premises before the god consents to proceed upon his round. ...The victim can invoke the new law if he dares. and bring the wreckers of his home into court, and recover damages, for the modern police-courts are not ruled by Shinto. But only a very rash 'man will invoke the new law against the communal judgment." In the Sendai case,

it is reported, 3 university professor offered as a plea for the defence. that where there were sixteen bearers nobody had any directing

and that the demolition of the police station, must have been involuntary

power

in other words it was the work of the god. It is an interesting Survival of a very ancient custom, and of custom measuring its strength against the law. It is probable that the police in this case will act discreetly. They are the guides, philosophers and friends of the peo ple, telling them when to rejoice and when to mourn, but there are occas- ions when public opinion does not. back them. When they antagonise. public opinion it is time for them to consider whether the uniform, and the sword are, after all, as potent as the gods of aforetime.
