At a meeting of the London Society at the hall of the Royals" Society of Arts, recently, Mr. H. Gordon Selfridge lectured on The Great Departmental Stores," tracing the evolution of the shop from ancient times to the present period.

Lord Leverhuire, who presided, said that Mr. Selfridge came to Lom don to serve the public well and faithfully, and such men were always. welcomed, men with brains and ability being encouraged to come and settle with us, and that was a system under which our commerce had been built up and maintained. The great store crystallised various businesses under one roof, and saved housewives from walking from one end of the town to the other, and there were many other advantages that made : the stctes method of shopping ate" tractive and economical.

Mr. Selfridge traced shopping from the caravan system. When one pictured the caravans leaving the gates of Babylon, Baghdad, or Nineveh, sit opened the eyes to see any Aladdin's lamp it was desired to discover. In the ages 2,000 to 3,000 years before Christ the Phoenicians had as much courage and imagina- tion in business as any busieness man could boast of now. To one who

From the caravan came the peddler's pack, to which succeeded the boath, which was the father of the small. shop,, About seventy-five years ago two people. one in America and one in England, hit upon the big shop idea, the latter being Mr. William Whiteley: He did not believe that either had ang conception of the extent to which' the combination of business might be Carried. That kind of business grady- ally ̈ ̈ grew, particularly in France, where the Bon Marche was a typical example. The great department store » had developed. The term was an unhappy one that originated in America, where it became the vogue to secure extensive premises that were too large to finance and depart- ments were run on a percentage basis with wholesale houses. There was not a family, not, an individual, not in daily need of one or more things offered for sale by the great distributing houses, and the freedom offered the public made them popular. It was therefore pessible for the store to have an icfiuence- in "the direction of a higher standard of. living. It was also responsible for such influence on the lives of its very large staff.

Mr. Selfridge devoted considerable attention to the architecture of stores," its utility and beauty. There was a great want of really fine buildings for the purpose of doing business in. It was the duty of the great house to unite, beauty, with its effort and there was to better way. than by developing the art. of architecture. He proceeded to show pictures of stores in Chicago, Toront to, Winnipeg, Paris, Philadelphia, Buenos Ayres, Sydney, South Africa, Madras, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, and some London, „town and subur- ban stores, expressing the opinion→→ from an architectural standpoint- that the London houses shown should- be burnt or pulled down.
