Owing to ill-health, Lord North- cliffe has been ordered by his medical advisers to take a long rest, and it is.. probable that he will remain in the South of France, whither he has gone · to recuperate, for many months. · He has retired from his directorship, so that his absence may not in any way interfere with the great developments which are contemplated at Carmelite House now that the war is over.

The new chairman of the com- pany is Mr. Thomas Marlowe, the editor of the Daily Mail, who has been connected with the firm for a "great many years..

The retirement of Lord Northcliffe is a great event in the newspaper world indeed it is almost a national event. It was only in 1888 that a young man named, Alfred Harms-. worth started in business at No. 26, Paternoster Square. He was poor, as well as young, but he had an in- domitable courage, ability, and enter- prise; and that young man older, but in other respects unchanged--is to-day Viscount. Northcliffe, the con-

paper combine in the world.

The story of his rise to fame and fortune is a veritable romance of - industry. He began in a small office, divided by a wooden partition, as the English agent for the American cycling magazine, Outing; but this venture was not a success, and the young firm, known as Carr and Com. pany, was threatened by extinction.

ין

..

Then it was that Mr. Alfred Harme worth conceived the idea of starting a weekly paper which should consist of replies to inquiries. The result.. was the launching of Answers to Correspondents, which is now fami- lar as Answers..

This little publication is the found- - pation upon which the Harmsworth fortunes have been bullt. It grew so fast and prospered so quickly (owing to its big Prizes for stupid- and now illegal-competitions) that other papers were started, rang- ing from Comic Cuts to the London Magazine, and it was only about a year ago that Lord Northcliffe retired' from the chairmanship of the Amalga- - mated Press, the organisation that controls these lighter periodicals. But it is as a newspaper proprietor that Lord Northcliffe has won famer » He has been a most fearless crític-of official incompetence, and though he he has many detractors, the majority of his country-men: believe he did great service during the wär.

As a young and penniless man, Mr. Alfred Harmsworth declared that he intended to die a millionaire- the owner of the Times, and at earl He has already realised two out of three of these early ambitions.""

MAJ-GEN, SEMENOFF

RESENTS AN INSULT.

Angered with the insulting remarks against the Cossacks made in a tele. gram sent by Lieut-General Knox to Dictator Koltchak, Major-General' Semenoff sent the following telegram to Lieut.-General Knox, and also its copies were sent to General Ohtani, Gen. Janin, the French Commander, and Generals Ivanov Rinov, Dotoff,...... koff Annenkoff; Kraschinikoff, and Kalmy-

In your Excellency's telegram addressed to Dictator Koltchak, your have classed the Cossacks, who have from the very beginning been exerts ing themselves for the suppression of c the Bolsheviks, with the Bolsheviks :: who are the loathed traitors. I desire... to know why you look down upon the Cossack leaders as upon the Bol- sheviks, and any such insult, no matter. whether it emanates from the fellow patriots or from Allies of Russia, can not be overlooked by the Cossacks. I.... hope that the British Government or you who command. the. Britsh troops have not cast any malicious slander: upon the Cossack leaders and the Russian troops

I, in the name of the Far Eastern Cossacka, hereby make a strong pro test against the Allies for the slur, hurled against the Russian Attamans.
