GOVERNMENT INTER- FERENCE,
Government interference with the ordinary routine of trade is always a delicate and doubtful operation, which oficial action in this direction during the war has only confirmed. Some correspondence in the Man chester Guardian on the proposed- restriction on foreign imports pro-- vides a case in point. At the quar terly meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Mr. Moore, against of Leicester, protested the importation of foreign-made cotton hosiery, and said that during the war our export had been captured by America and Japan. His motion. calling on the Government to main- tain the restriction on foreign cotton hostery was carried by a large majority: In this connection Lord Sheffield points out that before the war and during the war we have imported more cotton hosiery than we have exported; and of grey cotton yarns, whereas our large- export to Germany of £1,773,000 in. 1913 ceased, our exports to the United States and to Japan rose from. 5,170,000 lb. to 10,173,000 lb. Thus undoubtedly, he argues, our two Allies, the United States and Japan, came to our rescue, and in 1916 more than filled up the gap. We are now asked to take advantage Regular Direct Service from JAPAN, CHINA and STRANE to BEIRA, of a power bestowed for the pur DELAGOA" BAY,"DUBBAN, KAST LONDON, FORT ELIZABETH and CAFE poses of the war in order to set aside. TOWN, calling a MAURITIUS in roace and affording the Quickest Fraight our treaties of commerce with these Transport from the ORTENT to SOUTH AFRICA.

We exported to Japan in 1917 about £700,000 worth of cotton goods and nearly £1,300,000 of woollen goods. Japan might rea- sonably say, he observes, that if we exclude the goods she is willing to sell us we may lose the sale of our even larger volume of goods to her. -L. and C. Express.
