THE KEY TO OUR SHIPPING
POSITION.
STATEMENT BY SIR JOSEPH ALACLAY.
The armistice was signed only a few weeks ago, but the interval hus made a striking difference in the amount of shipping released for the ordinary purposes of commerce. The position, as is obvious, is yet very far removed from the normal pre- war condition of the shipping world, and the shipyards will be busy for months, indeed for years, before the wor losses are all niado good. S ae conspared with the beginning of November, a remarkable transforint - tion is been effected in the carrying of commodities to supply the needs of the British Isles, both in regard to foodstuffs and to rat material for trading purposes. Free shipping and ample supplies of coul are the key to our industris position. This, in general terms, wus the view of Sir Joseph Maclay, the Minister for Shipping, expressed to a reprosentu- tive of the Press Association.
"The terraination of hostilities,'* [said Sir Joseph, "hug eased enor
mously the shipping position. The shipments of munitions have ceased, Our merchant cruisers have been re- leused for the merchant service feet and the colliers have been demobi-" lised: Numerous craft of all Kinds previously engaged in naval and mili. tary work have been made available for bringing supplies to this country, and the removal of naval restrictions
DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP CO., LTD. has meant a great speeding up of
merchant shipping. The immedinto effect of all these things is to in- creuse the tonnage available for the

mutes to bring the accumulitions of cargo which are badly needed in this country (and which during the war. thoughsin many cases already bought and paid for, had been left behind in order to concentrate shipment on the nearer but much dearer, market of North America), and to take up the trade connections which were neces sarily sacrificed in the interests of the effective prosecution of the war. The time is not far distant when it will be possible to release tonnage from requisition on a substantia! scule, and thereby create a free thar ket in tonnage and freight. Already. tie ansount of space available for commercial cargo in the North At... lantic has been doubled, and instead, of cargo competing for space, spuck is now competing for cargo."
Asked as to the future of British shipping, Sir Joseph answered: "In pite of our very heavy losses, we imve to reason to think that British shipping will not be fully equal to": the demand likely to be made upon it. The great need of the moment is coal for export. On our coal ex- ports the whole of our shipping and financial position depends. We hope that with the release of miners from the Army it will not be long before the ships which low have perforce to go out in Eullast can take outward cargoce, thereby at-once relieving our financial siuation and reduging the cost of our imported supplies. Our shipping is not by any means Damal in its extent, but we are aiming at restoring the old conditions and get- ting rid of vexatious restrictions. L uy again that free shipping and umple supplies of coal are the key to our industrial position."
NAVAL MEN AND DEMOBILISA- TION.
Over 700 naval men, with their chief petty officers, smarting under what they consider the undue delay in demobilisation, paraded outside H/M.S. Eaglet on Jun. 12 to lay their complaint before the captain.
"They were received in what they described as a courteous and per fectly fair manner, and the captain considered and agreed to remedy the grievances mentioned.
There were
1. Immediate demobilisation or indefinite leave, as is being grunted to. men of other ships in port;
2. Better conditions as to food; 9. To be treated as men, and not as children,. by active service officers of the ship;
4. Swearing to be abolished
when giving any orden;
D. No men to be punished in consequence of the demonstration." The captain, after hearing the men's spokesmen, commented upon the orderly and willike manner in t which the parade had been carried out, and then the squad, maintain- ing their formation as they had done throughout the proceedings, marched back to their respective barrucks," Park-lane, Cunard House, and David Lewis Hostel.
The concessions asked for by the 700 naval men who paraded outside H.A.S. Eaglet, on Sunday, have all been granted, and 95 per cent, are now. on their way home on indefinite. leave awaiting demobilisation,
They are all grateful to the cap- tain for the consideration shown to them
