HONGKONG AMERICA'S. BEST PORT.

OUR "BETTER FACILITIES."

Replies to a Consular questionnaire Jupon the trade with the Far East, submitted by Mr. Ray E. Gunn, *Hongkong, manager of the Robert Dollar Co., are contained is a recent number of the Daily Commercial News, of San Francisco.

The following points are made in favour of Hongkong:

From a geographical point of view, Fongkong is the most centrally located port in relation to the Oriental ports supplying transhipment cargo. With the exception of Batavia and Guam it is a shorter distance to Pacific Coast, porta via Hongkong than to the same ports via Manila, the mileage saved via Hongkong being greater the farther north the Facific coast port. This makes Heugkong the logul trans-shipping pert.

The average vessel sailing from the United States Pacific ports to the Orient takes the southern route, calls a. Fionolulu. Japan, Shanghal, Manila, Hongkong. Shanghal, Japan, and tence across the Pacific. This teaves the Hongkong cargo last to be taken from the ship. The meaning of a terminal port is the port at which the vessel completes her cargo and "commences her homeward loading. In this instance the terminal port should be Hongkong.

It is not practical to run a vesse! from Shanghai to Hovigkong, to Manila and then back to Hongkong. 'to Shanghai. You would be travel-j ling the two legs of a triangle and would be calling at a port twice unnecessarily. Nor under present shipping conditions is it practical to run the vessel from Shanghai to Hongkong, to Manila and thence back to Shanghai for the reason that rearly 50 per cent. of the ordinary load of a vessel coming from America is for Mania, while more than 50 per cent. of her homeward cargo is from Hongkong and Shang hai. If a vessel rurning this nute were to discharge her Rongkong cargo inward and load her Hurgkong cargo cutward at one call, she would be compelled to overstow some of the Hongkong cargo, besides naving to stow rice in the Tween decks with Manila light cargo in the lower holds. Thiswould tend to make a ship tender and prevent, the ship from carrying a deck cargo. The most satisfactory way to handle a ship from the
