The Buffalo elevators now have about 14,000,000 bushels of grain. and are not able to take any more except as some is loaded out for rail About three weeks ago shipment. an unexpected thing bappened. Sud- denly the Government found that it was in need of gore grain than was' supposed. and it began to mass cars here and rush it out. This move- ment continued till about, 18,000,000 bushels had been, sent to the sea- board, when it appears that the de- mand ceased or the stomge gave out, and row the Buffalo elevators are idle again. They have not made p very good season, but they will profit all winter by the business they get, from the floating cargoes to be hand- led. Few people outside the traffic centres know how short the supply of grain whe all through the mid summer season. Now the barbour. is carrying more grain than ever before. The amount has not really... been approached but once or twice. Out at the long breakwater in a single row are tied up 58 Cf the entire 117.. cargoes. They make such an array that the moving-picture theatres have been using them as the most striking object lesson m Busines they could find. Taking all the grain intended for winter storage there, and it makes no difference if some of it is already gone, it is all fa existence somewhere, the aggregates about 67,000,000 bushels, or what would grow ir a season on about 6,000,000 acres of land, reckoned by wheat fields, or say nearly twice as large ao Connec to Buffalo more than 200,000,000 ticut. The lake feet has brought bushels of grain in a season once or twice: Nobody knows how this rast amount of grin would have been moved were there no lake feet..
RETURN OF THE CANADA-MARU,
The 0.8.K. Canada-maru, the former Captain of which committed Buicide in July last in connection steamer oft Tacoma, returned to with an accident which befell the Tolioharap on Feb. 12 ab ... with a full cargo." It will be remem- bered that in Judy last the steamer ran on a sunken rock off Tacotta and She was came near foundering. fortunately salved with heavy dam- age to the steru. Captain Yurna- moto, who was in command, at the time of the acc'dant, committed Eui- cide by shooting himself in the throat and then throwing himself overboard. three Repairs which took over months, having been completed, the vessel came back under a new can-" mand. Mr. Norimatu, the Purser. in a Press interview, says that the sunken rock on which the steamer struck is regarded by all navigators. as a very dangerous one: It in generally thought that once a vessel runs upon it there is little hope of her being refloated. Through the in-" defatigable efforts of the late Captain' and other members of the crow, the. versel was got off and saved from being wrecked on August 5. The high sense of responsibility manifest- ed by the late Captain in commit- ting suicide, says the Pureer, evoked high approbation not only of the Japanese residents, but of Americans generally. A certain American jour- nal went so far as decor the auicide ns the incarnation of Bukido?" which is an ear pure morrense 09: they can reach even on the Pacific coast.
