CALCUTTA AS BASE OF N.Y.K. OPERATION.
The NEK. has maintained up to the present (1) the Calcutta-New York and (2) the Calcutta-Seattle services in the midst of a rather with foreign sharp competition steamers since their inauguration The Calcutta-South Inst Fear, American service, above all, is steadily consolidating its footing, and the third steamer Kawachi Maru basi been arranged to be placed on the service, as reported previously. Qu the last mentioned service, the com. petition with foreign steamers. has It is generally been the acutest. fored that the competition between the NY.K. and the foreign steamers on the above-stated three lines will wax keener and the rate war will reach its actie when the N.Y.K. further improves all the three ser- vices. Whether or not an agreement in the form of a freight conference will be established between the in terested parties in the future is a question of mueli interest on the Japan shipping market.
ESTABLISHMENT OF KAWASAKI KISEN KAISHA
The steamship company, which has been repeatedly referred to in our previous ieues as the Daifuku Kiser Kaisha; has been decided to be re- nained the Kawasaki Kisen Kaishaj with the capital of 120,000,000. The new Company is almost exclu- sively financed by the Kawasaki Dockyard Co., se reported previous by, and will operato extensively with a big fleet of merchantmen to be completed at the Kawasaki Docks- yard. Business will be started in the near futurs with 10 cargo-bonis, each of 9,000-ton class. The new firm has drawn up & plan to possess 160,000 tons of newly-built vessels. within the coming two years, and the sizes of the vessels under weigh will be of 12,000 tons, 9,000 tome, 6,500 tous, and 2,700 tons. The fint ser.. vices to be opened will be the Bom boy and North American services. It is reported that an application for participation in the NY.K.-O.S.K Freight Conference on the Bombay line has been sent in. The new Com pany is starting construction of r number of passenger-boats, each of 12,000-ton class. Manchuria Delly News.
RECORD FLEET OF STEAMERS

On Feb. 18, there were in Dairez Harbour altogether forty-four steam- ere the largest fleet ever witnessed in the harbour since the Japanese took over the management of the Darren wharvest med
The O.SK. 8.8. Andes (7,772 tons), which brought American-made lovo motives, and the N.Y.K. ss.Sanački. Maru were the largest
Every barth along the quays was occupied, and there were besides a good number of ships in the rods, waiting for their turns to be berthed. According to a Wharf Office off- chal, up to a few years ago the monthly totals arrivals at Dairen used to be abous 200 at most Last year the figures remarkably increased to about 200 on an avenge. Dur- ing last October the Japanese ships alone numbered 212. The returne for 1918 were 2,898 vessels entered with the aggregate tonnage of. 8,210,520 tons
This bustle has been caused prob ably by the general dearth of cargoes in Japanese waters and ships are will ing to load where available even at very low rates,
