NEW FLOATIN'ORDOCK AT-

GOTEBORG.

Although Goteborg is a relatively important seaport, it has until lately. been without sufficient docking facili ties. The old graving dock, built 43 years ago, was entirely inadequate to meet present-day docking require- ments, especially since Sweden got a feet of comparatively large ocean steamers.

G

The Norwegian and the Danish shipyards were in a better position. Christiania, Norway, had a diy dočk 85 metres (278.8ft.) in length, and 4 floating docks for vessels from 1,000 up to 4,500 tons dri; Moss, 2 float- ing, docks for vessels of 700 tả 900 tons respectively; Porogrund, a float- |ing dook for 4,600 tons: Sandefjord, 3 floating docks for 500 to 1,600 tons: Christiansand, 1 Ury dock of á length of 97.6 metres (320.2t); Fre- derikshavn, Denmark, a floating dock for 1,700 tons; and in the Sound Oeresund), Elsinore (Helsingor) had,

JAMES LAU & CO.,

28, WYNDHAM STREET:

86.6 metres (234.9ft.), and, Malmo one of "a length of 716 metres (234.9ft.) to which was added the new large dry dock of a length of about 158 metres (518.3ft.).

It was evident, therefore, that something had to be done, if Go" tebog was not to be left too far be- hind in this respect. As early as 10 years ago several schemes-for: the construction of a new dry dock were put forward, but were afterwards. abandoned on account of uncertainty caused by the contemplated tension of the harbour. ti

The persons interested then decid- ed to build a floating dock, and plans therefore were drawn up in 1911. The 'Aktiebolaget Goteborgs Ekepps- dockor was "organised: in 1913 with a_capital stock of 500,000 crowns, which has been increased to 750,000 crowns this year, for the purpose of building a floating dock according to specifications prepared by the Gotaverken shipyarns, Goteborg- The dock was intended to accom Fmodate vessels with a docking weight up to 10,000 tons and 7.5 metres (24.6ft) draft. • The cost was calculated to be" 1,450,000 crowns for the dock and.

3,00,000 crowns for ground. Since the city had granteed secur ity for a loan of 625,000 crowns to the company, and had assumed cer tuin other obligations, such as dredg ing in the river and the gunting of necessary space, the company filed

petition for a Goreinment subsidy of 625,000 crowns, which adfcant, however, was reduced to 500,000. Crowns by the Riksdag in 1914; and this latter sum grunted on certain conditions with reference to the dark- ing of naval vessels.

The plan was to lease the dock to the Goto verken shipyards, and aá. the outbreak of the European wat a contract was made with the ship. yard for building the dock. Tho & shipyard bought the necessary mate- rul at once, by which timely action a large amount of money was saved In October, 1916, the first plates." were hid, and in November, 1916, the first section of the dock wus launched, und in August, 1917, the second. In November, of the same yeur the first vessel was docked. Ta June, 1918, the third section was finished and put in place, und on October 12 the dock was officially opened for use.

The dock was made larger thar originally intended. It measures 160 meres (524.9.) in length, over ull; the wiith on the pontoon deck. between the walls is 25 metres (8ft.) width over-all, 63 metres (108,2ft.) greatest depil over the keel blocker, 8.0 metres (24.018)_ Therefore it is the largest Boating dock in Scandinavia, capable of lift- ing vessels 180 metres (590.53.) long 28:5 metres (ft.) wide, and with a draft of water of 7.5 metres (24.08.). For comparison, it is pointed out thas the largest Swedish veskel, the Stockholm, is 168,75 metres (517) long and 18.93 metres |(82.11.) wide.

Electric power is used. and the centrifugal pumps, each with a cap- lucity of 86 tons of water per minuto, can empty the tanlos in one hour and a half. The dock is ** self-docking- ́

"In 1915 the Eriksberg Shipyard, Goteborg, Jaunched a flouting dock, which can lift vessels of 1,400 tom docking weight, or about 9,500 tons deadweight, and the same shinyard contemplates bilding another dock for, vessels of 8,000 tons.
