ATLANTIC-PACIFIC LINK, sponsor for the new undertaking
A marine nuptial event will be celebrated shortly (say: New York mail advices), when the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans are to be united by a freight steamship service. At the beginning of the world war the American-Hawail Steamship Line was the only connecting link between these two great ports, and the service was suspended because of the hazards entailed in navigating the waters of both oceans. At present the Government is running freight boats between New York, and the Pacific Coast, but this is only temporary.
It is proposed to establish the new line by way of the Patioma Canal, the Shipping Board having allocated to Struthers and Dixon, of Seattle, steamers for the service. The Board s has offered to tum over to the company five of its wooden cargo steamers of the 3,500-tons class. Cargoes for two of the steamers have already been arranged by Struthers who believes that the securing of the eastbound cargo will not give much
trouble. if return cargoes are not secured the shipping Board may sell the steamers on the East Coast.
In spite of the present unsettled conditions, Struthers believes that the new service will be an assured fact. Seattle has had no steamer LET from 16th April, 1919-freight service to New York and 1st Floor, No. 38 Nathan Road, Atlantic ports since the American Kowloon, Dairy Farm Co.'s promises). may not matter, much if no money is made at least, that is the way much of the ocean traffic is at the present time carried on."'
¡A Government-controlled........boat recently brought a cargo from a Pacific Coast port to New York at a freight rate of 6 dols. per ton. It cost 14,000 dola. to bring the cargo to theEast Coast. There was no return cargo to be had at once, and the crew was sent back at the Government expense, amounting: to approximately 7,000 dols. In figur ing up the operation, it was found that Uncle Sam was out of pocket to the amount of about, 20,000 dols.
Not only can the railroads carry freight.. across the Continent at a lesser cost than the ship can carry it around, but in the latter case marine and war risk insurance must be figured into the cost, which the rail- roads do not have to pay. It requires about six weeks to make the trip by way of Panama. I would be insane
cor anybody but the United States tovernment to enter into such a Gheme," said a shipping agent.
And the Government will not care.

· A FAMILY NECESSITY.
Many shipping men are sceptical | hai. regarding the success of the new enterprise, even, though the Govern ment is at its back. They contend that steamers cannot compete with railroads in carrying freight betweeD the two coasts under the present VERY family should be provided conditions. Experience of late has with Chamberlain's Pain Balm at shown that only 13 diols. to 15 dols.all times. Sprains may be cured in much per ton can be charged for bringing a back, lame shoulder pains in the side and less time whon proniptly treated. Lame cargo of canned goods from Seattle chest and rheumatic pains are some of or San Francisco to New York, and the diseases for which it is especially it is argued that this will not cover valuable.
