As stated by Reuter recently the prospects in British shipyards are very bright, provided labour settles down, well over 100 vessels, repre senting a very large tonnage, having. been booked. Many of the big lines, including the Cunard, Anchor, and

BI are among those who are embarking upon extensive building plans. Of the lines mentioned the B.L is the only one in which people in this part of the world are specially interested. Nothing is said as P. & C., Bibby, Blue Funnel, Gleir and other new vessels which will take the Far Eastern run, but all of these Companies will shortly have additions to their present seriously depleted fleets, and before another year has passed the tonnage problem and with it-many minor troubles will have dis appeared, In a memorandum on the world's merchant shipping, issued by Lloyd's Register and the Admiralty, Sir James Wilson argues that, within even a few months the supply of shipping for commerce will be greater than the demand, as compared with the-war relationship, and that freights will fall to a level not much more than double the rates current before. the war. The layman does not find it very easy to understand why, if the supply of ships outstrips the demand -and it will do so inevitably sooner or later freight cannot be reduced to a much lower level thair Sir James: Wilson instances, for that of course is not low at all. Even when one considers the increased cost of ships,

The million ton mark at that time was passed by the Ellerman Lines, Ltd., whose total was 200 vessels; just under it was the Furness Line, with 220 vesseli. The three amalgamations gave a total tonnage which equalled about 18 per cent. of the Mercantile Marine: The Cunard fleet of vessels shows vast diminution, but the eight vessels to be built will bring its tonnage up considerably, for they will be large ones. In spite of its heavy losses the. Cunard, with its subsidiary companies, will make a bold bid to retain ocean supremacy in passenger traffic. While preemi nently a passenger line the war has brought this and many other com panies considerable experience in the. operation of cargo vessels.
