THE O.S.K. LONDON LIME.
The Japan Chronicle" of Feb. 2 says the telegram received by the hend office of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha on the 30th ultimo announcing that the general meeting of the London Con- Įference held in London on the 22nd ultimo gave a decision in favour of the company's admission Into the union was naturally received with considerable satisfaction by the management, who have been at great" pains for months to attain this object. The entry of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha into the Conference 'will naturally lead to "keen competi" tions with the Nippon Yusen Kaisha. for the absorption of cargo and passengers. It is reported that the Osaka company will place seven new steamers of from 9,000 to 12,000 tons, including the Borneo, the Alta and Celebes, on the line, dispatching them from Yokohama once a month. with London as the terminal port..
Mr. Murata, Manager of the Deep- Sea Department of the Osaka Shosew Kaisha. who has take an active part in the matter, as quoted by the Mainichi, says that the question has been outstanding since the days when Mr., Nakahashi, the present. Minister of Education, was President. of the company, and the management of the company was always on the 18ok-out for an opportunity to carry HONGKONG & SOUTH CHINA COAFT PORT SÉRVICE,

Mediterranean in 1916, the Osaka Shosen Kaisha "placed its steamers Indo-maru and Malay-maru at the" service of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha.. which was reluctant to risk its vessels in the Mediterranean. ·The- request made by the Osaka company of the Tokyo concern at the time to- use its good offices to obtain for itself participation in the Conference, however, met with a curt refusal.
In November last, immediately after the conclusion of the armistice, Mr. Murata, acting under the instruc- tions from the President of his com pany, visited Mr. Ito, one of the Managing Directors of the Nippon- Yusen Kaisha, and again asked for the friendly support of the latter company, when Mr. Ito suggested.* that the Osaka Shosen Kaisha give va up the idea altogether or the ground that participation would not be con ducive to its interests, as it was obe... vious that it would be beaten in com- petition with the Nippor Yusen Kai- sba. He further insinuated that its- entry into the Conference might only end in playing into the hands of foreign companies. The Managing Director of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha nevertheless consented to convey the intention of the Osaka shipping concern to the London headquarters of the Conference. Suspecting the sincerity of the rival company, however, the Osaka Shosen Kaisha sent a telegram instructing Mr. Okada, an official of the com-

approach important members of the Conference directly, with a request that the company's application be given sympathetic consideration. Mr. Okada was instructed to infimate- - to them that the Osaka Shosen Kalkha. had ¥10,000,000, as reserve fund, to- be employed if the negotiations it had in hand fell through, and that the company was in as prosperous: : a state as the Nippon Tusem Kaisha, adding that Mr. Naka- hashi the present Education Minister, was the former President" of the Company. As the result" of strenuous efforts subsequently trade, the company's request was at lengtir granted and it has been allowed into the Union on easy conditions. Mr. Murata, who is quoted by the Osaka journal, expresses much satisfaction that Japan's shipping rights, have thus been further extended.
Mr. Tagami, of the Osaka branje of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, who is also quoted by the same journal, states that it is to the credit of the OsakaShosen Kaisha that that.com- pany has succeeded: inaugurating a line between Yokohama and Lon- don, a distance of 12,000 miles. It is inevitable that as the natural sequence of the entry of that company into the Conference competition should arise in the treatment and handling of pas- sengers and cargo between the rival companies, although it is absolutely unlikely that for the sake of com petition freights and passenger fares should be lowered. Against the Osaka, Company's seven vessels to be dispatched ooce a month, his company has 12 liners on the run, while one or two tramp steamers are put on every month, and thus the latter occupies a position far superior to that of the former company. In asmuch, however, as the former is on the offensive while the latter is on the defensive, much activity may be shown by the 0.5.K. Taking a wider outlook, it is highly satisfactory that the maritime influence of Japan has been extended.
