The agreed value of all those ships has been recovered and the amount placed in National War bonds, but unless the cost of shipbuilding falls very materially it will be impossible to replace the vessels which have been lost for anything like the amounts recovered. The two mail steamers referred to in the last report, which are named Nalders and Narkunde, have been taken over by the Government, under chester aa armed cruisers. No progress has been inade with the large mail steamer of 16,000 tons, raferred to in the last report, nor has any advanes been made with the work of construction of two ships of the Ballarat class contracted for with Messrs.
