Funsability and manifests way:bing, but enthanam over the matter, while Mr. Inukal, President of the Kokuminto, is an ardent advocats of the proposal. The views of Mr. Hara, Premier and President of the Solydkal, ara Foot yet defined, but judging from the sympathetic referance made by Viscount Uchida, the Foreign Minister, and Baron Makino, a Japanese pesce dale- gato, to the matter he ia avidently favourably disposed towards it. In say case it is observable that most «Japanesa statesmen and publicists who support the proposal tako the view that the organisation of a League of Nationa will break down the racial prejudices and discriminations which rankle in Japanese breasts. This is the viêm takan by the "Osaka Awahi” also. Dis. cassing the subject, the Osakes journal expresses the conviction that since the proposal is most earnestly championed by President Wilson, it will come up for discussion at the Peace Con ference, although it is difficult to say whether the discussion will take place in the initial or closing stage of the Conference. American participation in the war, the "Amahi" proceola, was in the caase of humanity and justice, and ber sole object was to punish the common enemy of mankind. It is therefore but natural that the spokesman of America shanid Dow advocate a League of Nations in the bopa of establishing a permanent world-wide peace by that means. In short, the American Pre- sidant intends to establish the perfect equality of rights of all" peoples of the j world.

ing tone, that those Western statesmon

advocacy of the equal treatment of all races and the self-determination of all peoples during the time when Germsay was committing all sorts of destruction have become silent now that the Allied victory has been assured, and are now protagonists of the right of the victors. The Allied conception of humanity, and justice is thus growing more hazy by degroos, and racial prejudices and discriminations, which were for moment cast into the background, again hold sway over the minds of the Allied peoples The prevalence of racial pre- judica is largely responsible for the vigorous objections being raised by some Allied staterman to the League of Nations principle.

The Christian nation, the "Asahi". proceed, have the weakness of looking down upon the believers in other religions, whom they regard as much inferior to themselves. This is not rurely, the attitude which Christ taught them to take up towards others. "Love" in" Christianity must be com prehensive enough to embrace the whole mankind, irrespective of racial distinctions. Justice and bumanity,

which are preached by President Wilson with considerable zaal, will be but poor things if they permit of dis- erim natary treatorent against peoples who are of differans races and who embrace different, religious faiths, and the "Asahi" refuses to think that such are the fine principles champioried by the American President. If its conception of the loftiness of Mr. Wilson's aspira- tions is 'n just one, it finds in the organ! isation of a League of Nations a good opportunity for doing away with all racial prejudices and religious fallacies. Once these evil and mistaken ideas are destroyed, all the anti-Japanese problems in Australia and on the Pacific coast of Americs will become easy of solution..

Mr. Victor L. Conaghan, a gigantic. American from Ohio, is at the bend of 40. United States drillers who are to pat down 'a öumber of wells in search of petroleum under British soil. The inauguration of the Bratwall at Hard- stoft, near Chesterfield, was performed by the Marquis of Hartington son of the Duke of Davanabire, on whose land the site for the boring has been chosen. Lord Cowdray's firm (Messrs. $. Pearson and Son, Ltd.) are undertalking the work, as petroleum development managers for the Govern ment. Lord Cowdray, in welcoming the Ministry the representatives of Munitions, said that until oil was actually found, one should not be per- fectly certain, but short of that certainty, he had the greatest confidence that the first supply of crude oil in Engload would be produced in the neighbourbood of Chesterfield, although he did not say that it would be. produced from this first well Mr. Cocaghna, en behalf of of the drillers, remarked, amid cheers. If there is oil in England we'll get it," Lord Hartington then started the machinery which actuates o henry drilling bit, alternately lifted up and dropped. Tools similar to this will be Bed until the boro-hole is from 2,000 to 4,000 fost deep, and the operations will proceed night and day. The depth at which mit is expected cannot be stated with certainty, but it will probably be reached within 2,000 foot. The driling machinery is capable for boring a hole 4,000 feet deep Mr. Conaghan, the drilling superintendent, one of the fore No. 555

most experts of the United States, was specially slected "for England, by the American Government. Seven wellia will be drilled near Chesterfield-three north of the town and lour south of it. The machinery available is suficient to drill 10 wella. Within six months It is expected to be known with certainty whether all man be gas in the first well or Bot
