ALLIED TROOPS TO MAKE A STAND AT COMPEIGNE
*****LONDON, June 10. There was no clement of surprise at the renewal of the German offensive. The sector chosen, between Nayon and was anticipated in the Houtdidier, raviews of expert opinion recently sabled.
The principal objective is the famous town of Compeigne, between which and Neyon the country is densely wooded, but the ultimate objective is obviously Paria The French line covering the capital forms a salient from, Montdidier to Trocanes on the Ourcq, with an extension.. thenca to the Marue at Exome. Inside the salient the main military centre is Compeigne, while Villers Cotteret is a subsidiary centre. All this fortified territory, which is the the chief remaining bulwark of the capital consists of detached masses di Tising ground lying across the bend of the Oise valley and containing the great roal and railway to Paris. The line is vital and in defending it the Allies are defending the very heart of France. There is little space for retreat and the French and British Armies will have to bear the weight of the battle, but both. are still unbroker and every confidence is felt in General Feeb.
A counter-blow will perhaps, as 2. Trash writer, saya, minke Paris a Figatie Verdun and the tomb of the German Army, and in any case it is expected that the Sghting will be pretracted, for the battle may
xtended north, or south by other desperate German attacks.

LONDON, June 10.
A Portuguese East African com munique states that two enemy columns crossed Lario River on the 27th and 8th May. THE SILVER MARKET.
LONDON, June 6 Mesars. Samuel, Montagu and Company report that the price of silver is unchanged. If the rise of one per cent. in insurance from New York to Londen,
foreshadowed from New York, materialises it is quite possible that this will be reflected in the Loaden price.
Reports from London, dated 6th and 7th inst., state that the Silver Market is steady...
