A JAPANESE PAPER ON BRITISH APPREHENSIONS.

"British Merchants in China Fear the Expansion of Japanese Trade." This in the title of an article contained in the Chugai Shogyo of October 6. "A summary of it follows:

"The expansion of Japanese trade in China is regarded with much abhorrence by "the British residents in China. Japanese goods manufactured after the model of British articles are now finding their way into China and India. England waged indirectly a war against

Germany through her jealousy of the prosperity of German trade. Now Japanese ascendency in Oriental trade is arousing suspicion. It is too late now for the British merchants to try to cheek Japanese progress, which is the result of the endeavours of many years.

It is evident that England will moet | a serious labour and wage question after, the war. The solution of it will involva greater difficulty than in any other country. The labour community, being discontented with wage mtes before the war, will demand the same rate as in war time, which will most presumably be followed by labour demonstrations, strikes and so on.

"The above statement is considered to greatly diminish the competing capacity of British goods, for the rise în wages will mean the appreciation of coal prices. One may cow come to the -conclusion that goods mabufactured in England after the war will cost much

more.

The Japanese cotton yarn trade has also made a rapid growth "Germany is another formidable competitor of Great Britain in China," anys the article, "but Japan is more to be feared. Electrical machinery and sundry goods hitherto exported by Eng land in large quantities will entirely be swept away from the Chinese market by
