Signor Orlando, in his speech, said the reason why Italy joined in the war at an unfavourable moment was that if they had not joined they would have signed their own death warrant. He referred scathingly to Austria's disloyalty and Germany's mad pride. Italy was impelled to the side of the nations fighting for the right to live. Italian solidarity with the Allies was absolutely essential. Isolated victory and isolated peace were impossible.
