RUSSIANS COMPEL THE GERMANS TO FLEE AT SEVERAL POINTS.

LONDON, Out.

Fierce fighting, says a Petrograd telegram, is proceeding along the whold front, both sides attacking, with the Russians generally, according to a communique, having the better of the exchanges and causing the Germans at many points to flee in disorder and abandon material.

Some Russian trenches have been captured by the Germans at one of the lakes in the region cost of the Dvinsk-Vilne line, but the Bus sians are Bg ing to recover them. Besides repulsing German attacks at other lakes, the Russians stormed a town and village north-caet of Lake Medriol. Their cavaly, east of Lake Match, charged the in- fantry protecting the convoys and captured hundreds of waggong pri soners, horses and quantities of arms, after they had sabred the fleeing Germans. Surprise attacks took place at a number of villages cast and. south-east of Novogrodek, which forced the German garrisons to fee fo their main positions, abandoning sms, animunition, and hundreds of dead, who had been bayonotted.

Many prisoners were taken at a point south-east of Baranovilchí, half way between Novogrodek and Fínsk

The Germans were driven across the River Charu and further south neng Kolki, which lies to the north-east of Luck eduk

The severe Garman attack was complete fiasco as the Russians counter-attacked and indicted enormous damage, making the Germans | flee in disorder.

EXTRAORDINARY FORMIDABLE GERMAN DEFENCES,

LONDON, Oct. 3."

A message from Paris says the substance of numerous accounts of the western battles confirms the extraordinary formidableness of the German défences, which in some cases neither bombardiment nor wholesala explosions of mines wholly wracked:

The French at Soucher exploded 12,000lbs powder below German trenches near a wood, where to the Germans retired into a perfect war- ren of underground sholtera which the French rere forced to tackle separately in the face of an awful machine run fre. Bloody work ensued. Numorous machine-guns in pits covered with steel plates did terrible execution before the French, with the aid of bombs, finally cap. tured the wood; **

THE FRENCH MAKE APPRECIABLE TRENCH TO TRENCH PROGRESS,

The afternoon communique, issued at Pari”, says that in Artois the enemy violently bombarded our position east of Souchez, fre, how avar, made appreciable trench to trench progress. On the La Folie Erights in Champagne we gained an important section of hostilo positions forming the alient on the present line to the north of Mesnil. Our aviators bombed the railway junction behind the German hres and wo cantonaded some of their positions. The night was otherwise quiet.
