RUSSIANS COUNTER-ATTACKING

ENERGETICALLY.

DESPERATE FIGHTING ALONG THE WHOLE FRONT.

B

Laspas, Sout, 10, The energy of the Tussian counter-attacks along the whole front if julinitted in a German communique. The desperate nature of the fight ing is attested to by a Petrograd communique, which, after mentioning that the situation is practically changed in the Rigu region, says that the Gemusas between the river Lantze and Jacobstadt wers unable to withstand furious Russian bajonet counter-attacks. The object of the enemy's offensive in this hgion is apparently to drive the Russians from the right bank of the Divina. Further south, on the Vilua roads, where the position is generally stationary, the enemy is eqtrenching vigorously.

The Russian communique states that south-east of Grodno, towards Skidel, and along the left bank of the Niamen, Russian troops on Wednesday, by a series of force notions aimed solely at inflicting the heaviest possible losses, succeeded in checking the enemy's offensive. The communique says that the Russian continuo their retirement in perfect order in conformity with the general plan, making successful counters attacks froin time to time. Thas near Kakharo, west of Skidel, the Germans fled before the counter-attacks of the Russiuris g

Between the Niemen and the Priget rivers the Russians are rotir- ing towards the district between the river Zelvinnks und the town of Rujany.

A vigorus offensive by enemy fufantry and cavalry along the left Tonk of the Pripes towards the Piusk marshes was arrested, and a siņi- ne résult was achieved on the roads to Kovno, where the Russians are stubbornly holding their positions on the Upper Stubel and Ikvi rivers under a very fierce artillery fire."

The commitique, referring to the Sureth successes, says that the Russian Armies are truly al resolutely crying out a movement in isinfonuity with the general plan, and contemplate the future with con- f fidquer, relying on their faithful Ally, the French Army, which for a fortnight and seen baminding the Geninou front with terrible offent."
