THE WAR.

(Reuter's Service to the China Mail)

ON THE EASTERN FRONT.

THE FALL OF BRESTLITOYSK.

LONDON, Aug. 971 The Germans, says an Amsterdam telegram, adwis that the Russian retreated from Brestlitorsk in good order. The Russian rearguard made a bold defence though badly outnumbered.

There have been great scenes of joy in Berlin. The President announced the success in the Reichstag and was greeted with storms of applause from all sides.

A HOLLOW VICTORY.

LONDON, Aug. 27.

Despite German jubilation it appears that the capture of Brestlitovak is merely another hollow victory. The late of the fortress was preatically sealed when the Russians failed to hold the line Bobr-Nuroff-Bug against the vast namerical and material superiority of the enemy. The Russians had time to remere all guns and munitions, and therefore it is probable that the Germans found only an empty shell. The Russians are preparing farther positions further to the rear, but oven there will be evacuated, if necessary, to prevent the Germans from delivering the smashing blow which they have been vainly atriving to deliver for months past at the cost of an enormous waste of men and materials.

ORDERLY RUSSIAN RETREIT.

11

LONDON, August 97. To-night's Berlin communique, says a telegram from Amsterdam, indicates! fresh activity on the part of General von Hindenburg in the Baltic proriaces" south-ward of Mitau, and says that the Russians have evacuated Olita. The total absence, however, of any claim to booty either here or at Brestlitovsk shows bow orderly and well-executed is the Russian retreat.

RUSSIANS INFLICT HEAVY LOSSES..

LONDON, Aug. 28

An official Fetrograd communique reports stubborn fighting in Courland. The Russians are preasing the Germans to the north of the Dvinsk Poseureo Railway. There is no change at Vilna. The Russians have blocked feres attacks made by the Germans both day and night at Bielostock, indicting heavy losses on the enemy.

GARRISON REJOIN THE FIELD ARMY.

Prior to leaving Brestlitorak the Russians exploded the fortifications and bridges, and the garrison rejoined the field army.

THE NEED FOR ECONOMY.

The Speaker's Suggestions,

LONDON, Aug. 28. The Speaker of the House of Commons, addressing a meeting at Pearith, said that in war time thrift was a vire, generosity a sire, and waste a crime. The State should first set an example in economy by discontinuing the salaries of Members of Parliament in war time, however right such salaries might be in times of peace. The Governmont might also reduce the number of officials. The nation itself could economise in ment, bread, drink, tobacco and other things that were mostly imported.

TWO MORE MILLION RUSSIANS IN TRAINING.

LONDON, August 29. The Times' Petrograd correspondent has obtained interesting statements from . Sazoneff, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and M. Polivenofi, Minister of War.

All were convinced of the altimate success of the campaign in the West, and he reperted that Russia would make no peace while a single hostile soldier remained on Rassian soil, M. Polivanoff was optimistic. He said: Our armies are gradually moving to new positions. The enemy's main concentrations are around, Vilno, where it is likely an important battle will be fought, but the fate of the cam pain will not be decided before sometime next year. The armies can stand the winter without inconvenience. Everything is ready for it. Meanwhile, two more millions are training to be ready in the Spring. The safety of Petro- grad is fully assured. General Raseky commands the Petrograd front and disposes several armies,
