WHAT THE WAR IS COSTING GREAT BRITAIN.
STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER.
LONDON, June 15.
In the House of Commons, Mr. Asquith, in moving for a vote of £250,000,000, uaid that this was the fifth vote of credit since the outbreak of war, and they had been three such rotse in the Enancial year 10kt-15. Normal supplies on a pance basis were voted before the war, consequently tha credits provided for additional aspanditure, making a total of £362,000,000, which was £5,000,000 in excess of the actual expenditure,
Mr. Asquith said that froin. April to the 12th June the daily cost of the war had amounted to £3,660,000, while in the future the Army and Navy ox- penditure would expand slightly, and our financial obligatious to our Allian increase. Then the daily cast of the war would be at least £3,000,000.
He asked the country and the Empire to follow him in a wider survey of the situation. The Government had been reconstructed, but he must exprais his deep and abiding gratitude to his Liboral eslieagues, To part from them. was the most painful experience in bis public lito. An unparalleled situation had to ha mot, demanding the entire energies of the nation. Consequently, be had to consider bow best he could respond to the call of public duty. Our national policy remained unchanged, namely, to pursue the war at any cost to a victorious issue, (Loud cheers.)
Mr. Asquith concluded by saying that the formation of a National Gor. ernment demonstrated not only to the Empire but to the whole world that Britons were resolved whole-heartedly and without party distinction to pro- recute the war with evary moral and material force (Chears.). After asying that it was impossible to over.estimate the value of the entry of Italy, Mr. Asquith said he had always emphasised the gravity of the task and confidence
