ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO BRIEN A STAFF SER- GEANT.

The charge of an alleged, attempt to bribe Staff Burgeant Hawkins, Chist Clerk of the Army Service Coepe, Hongkong, was heard to-day by Mr. Wood at the Magis

The defendant, a Chinesa named Wong Kam Ying, a ecal murchant of Pottinger Street, was charged with inciting to con spire and collude with Staf Sergeant Hawkins to defind the Government of a certain quantity of coal and also with pro mising him 300 per month and by thrust ing foes the pocket of Stall. Sergeant Hawkins $100 and inviting hint to deviate from his datis.

The Crown Solicitor (SI. P. Hodgson) prosecuted on behalf of the Government and bir. Grist of Mames Wilkinson and Griet represented the defendant.

Raviewing the case for the Crown, Mr. Hodgson said that defendant was under a contract to supply coal to the Army Service Corps. The contract started about

April 14t and a consignment of coal was apparently not in scordance with the contract. It was abort and, in fact, it was unscreened coal. There was a largo quantity of dust though the contract specifically stated it should he screened
