EDINBURGH, June 30,

A CRICKET,

The trial match between the East of Scotland and the Rest, under the auspices of the Scottish Cricket Union, was played Broughty Forry, and was remarkable for high scoring. Mr. W. G. 8 mart, of the Watsoniane, put on a eratúry, and his play was distinctly meritorious. W. Thorburn, Clydesdale, and C. S. Paterson, Carlton. also did well. The forcing uzickat of the Eastern Coustics, who were playing against | timo, was of the finest desamption." R. G.; Tait opened briskly, and the Frasers fol loved with burticaue of hitung. Also Fraser making specially mighty drives. W. C. Coulter did well, but his play was stolid in comparison with his enlleagues.

CHINA'S FOREIGN TRADE

Britain Still Ahead.

The trade report for 1913 just issued by the Maritime Customus ier

Rretnarkable

document, illestrating by a wealth of

statistics the new tendencies of China. The' foreign trade reacbed the respectabiu figure of £148,000,000, ‘a) d, withough it is inu- possible to estimate accurately the precise Amount of the British share in it, owing to the par played by Hongkong sa a grand redistributing and re-shipping centre, the statistics prove conclusively that British shipping. despite every effort to displace it, formed 41 per cent of the 93,000,000 tos of shipping entered and cleared. The Japanese accounted for 95 per cont., and Germany was nowhere.

Cotton goods stůl form the most import- ant import, and total £27,000,000, which the British contributed over half; hut, as in the case of shipping. Japan was the most formidable rival. "Ber trade is slowly creeping up, shirtings and sheetings showing smsational advances, and being now nearly half the British total.

It is interesting to note that the importa of machinery, which have been the subject of nach Press debate recently, owing to the allered supineness of British traders, sim contrasted with "Germany's activity. atsount to lose, than a million sterling. on the other hand, the trade in whilst metals is largely British, and install. expanding, mounting now to £4,500,000.

wit

Even more interesting is the official ad- mission that, after taking into consideration all possible national assets and liabilities. not only is there a heavy trade balanes against Chius, but also an apnoel deficit of of £21,000 000 totally unaccounted for. even when remittances of £7.000,00 from Chinese abroad are c nsidered. The tariff confcretes which China hipes OTWEZ in September therefore acquires an added signideance, for unless China secures from che Powers the soil'ed Mackay Treaty terns, raining the Customs duties by an an nal sum of £11,190,000, it is dialt to aso how the county ont remain solvent. Yet, despite this position, semi-officially announced that Chins is considering the Labling of a demnod at the forthcoming tarif conference he the control of the for eign Inspector General of Cantoma to be entirely revised, the appointments of port commissioners and minor officials reverting to the hands of the Government, and thus wweuping away the syskon established by Sir Robert Elärte ""Daily Telegraph." ·
